Player-by-Player Guide to Barcelona's Young Guns Ahead of UEFA Youth League Semi

Karl MatchettMar 20, 2017

Barcelona's epic comeback victory over Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Champions League took the football world by storm—but it's not only the seniors who are hoping for European glory this season.

The under-19 squad at La Masia, run by head coach Gabri Garcia—himself a former Barca winger—are in the semi-finals of the UEFA Youth League, the age-group-specific version of the premier continental competition.

Barcelona face RB Salzburg in the last four, with Real Madrid and Benfica in the other semi.

Here's everything you need to know about the potential Camp Nou stars of tomorrow, with particular thanks to the insight of Albert Roge, who regularly covers Barca's youth sides for Spanish outlet Sport.

GK: Sergi Puig

Age: 18

UEFA Youth League minutes 2016/17: 450

Roge: First-choice goalkeeper for the important games. Very quick between the sticks and good with the ball at his feet. Plays often enough to suggest he'll be promoted to Barca B next season.

You should know: The Juvenil A—the basis for this under-19 side—goalkeepers could barely have better support from the coaches. Gabri's assistant is Albert Jorquera, a former Barcelona academy graduate who played around 20 times across a decade for the first team, where he was usually a back-up.

GK: Josep Martinez

Age: 18

UEFA Youth League minutes 2016/17: 180

Roge: Noted for his height, it allows him to deal well with aerial balls into the penalty area.

You should know: Villarreal and Real Madrid chased Martinez before Barca snared his signature from regional side UD Alzira, according to Catalan-focused outlet Futbol Base Catala (in Spanish).

DF: Dani Morer

Age: 19

UEFA Youth League minutes 2016/17: 443

Roge: An important part of the puzzle for coach Gabri. In the back line, he features at full-back, but when the team have possession, he will often move into a more central pivot position.

You should know: Morer has captained the side in the last two matches in the competition, beating Borussia Dortmund in the last 16 and FC Porto in the quarter-finals.

Roge: The best defender in the team. He's quick, aggressive and good in the air. Already features in the B team.

You should know: The left-back is a Spain under-19 cap and has played five times for Barca B this season, more than any other player from the UEFA Youth League squad.

DF: Eric Montes

Age: 18

UEFA Youth League minutes 2016/17: 400

Roge: The usual captain of the team but has been left out in some of the important games. Centre-back noted for his aggressive playing style.

You should know: As well as central defence, Montes has also previously featured at right-back and in holding midfield.

DF: Oriol Rey

Age: 19

UEFA Youth League minutes 2016/17: 630

Roge: Central midfielder converted to centre-back for this season. He brings the ball out of defence well, which helps the fluidity of the team.

You should know: Rey has played more minutes in the UEFA Youth League than any other Barca player this season.

DF: Oscar Mingueza

7 of 19

Age: 17

UEFA Youth League minutes 2016/17: 288

Roge: Always quick into the tackle, he has become one of the fixed parts of Gabri's team. He's still a second-year player and has a big future.

You should know: Despite starting the Youth League campaign on the bench, Mingueza has won his way into the side, playing in both the last 16 and the quarter-finals.

DF: Santiago Bueno

8 of 19

Age: 18

UEFA Youth League minutes 2016/17:

Roge: Centre-back who has recently arrived from Penarol. Made his debut in the Youth League in the last match; he's tall but doesn't appear an aggressive player. Needs time to adapt to the style.

You should know: A Uruguay under-20 international, he also has an Italian passport. His brother (Gaston) and cousin (Gonzalo) are also professionals in Uruguay's top flight.

MF: Alex Collado

9 of 19

Age: 17

UEFA Youth League minutes 2016/17: 557

Roge: Central midfielder on the sides of the three with a fantastic left foot. Works hard defensively and creates great openings for the team.

You should know: Collado set up the equalising goal for Barca in the quarter-finals, paving the way for the late 2-1 success.

MF: Oriol Busquets

10 of 19

Age: 18

UEFA Youth League minutes 2016/17: 572

Roge: Although he's not related, he's the most similar player in the academystylistically speakingto Sergio Busquets. Always well-positioned, he keeps the balance of the team and stops plenty of opposition counter-attacks.

You should know: He signed a three-year deal in 2015 and looks to have a great future. Bleacher Report's Sam Tighe profiled Oriol in December and compared him to namesake Sergio.

MF: Braima Fati

11 of 19

Age: 18

UEFA Youth League minutes 2016/17: 0

Roge: One of the most in-form players right now. Started the season without a place in the side but has convinced Gabri, and he returned to the team in January. Runs the channels and is adept at arriving late into the penalty area.

You should know: Aged just 15, Fati was labelled "an [Andres] Iniesta in the making" by Yahoo Sports. Others from that 2013 list of "future stars" included Sergi Roberto and Rafinha—both first-team regulars now.

MF: Monchu

12 of 19

Age: 17

UEFA Youth League minutes 2016/17: 325

Roge: Capable of being the catalyst for the team. This season, he is struggling to find his best form and is accustomed to being used off the bench. Has quality but lacks confidence in his own ability.

You should know: Arrived at the club from Real Mallorca. After signing, Mundo Deportivo reported (in Spanish) that the Canary Island club regarded him as one of the players with the best competitive spirit, who loved playing the gameand played better in matches than he trained.

MF: Jordi Tur

13 of 19

Age: 18

UEFA Youth League minutes 2016/17: 336

Roge: He is Mr. Versatile for Gabri. He can play in almost any position and will always fulfil his duties. An all-terrain performer in every sense.

You should know: Sport (in Spanish) regarded Tur as the player in the squad who was most like their head coach, Gabri, during his playing days at Barca.

MF: Alasana Manneh

14 of 19

Age: 18

UEFA Youth League minutes 2016/17: 133

Roge: Arrived in the summer just past and has adapted well. Has a powerful shot from outside the box with his left foot and is capable of orchestrating the team with his play.

You should know: Alasana is from Republic of the Gambia, but his footballing education took place in Qatar—Barca signed him from the Aspire Academy.

FW: Jeremy Guillemenot

15 of 19

Age: 19

UEFA Youth League minutes 2016/17: 446

Roge: A powerful forward who knows how to move around the pitch and take advantage of space. Has goals to his game.

You should know: A Switzerland youth international, Guillemenot signed in the summer from Servette; he scored a brace on his UEFA Youth League debut for Barca and also netted on his debut for Barca B, playing less than 20 minutes off the bench.

FW: Seung-Woo Lee

16 of 19

Age: 19

UEFA Youth League minutes 2016/17: 417

Roge: He has a special quality to his game but has such a slight build that he struggles at this level. If everyone is available, he'll almost certainly be on the bench.

You should know: Joined Barca at age 13 and the South Korean has long been tipped for the top, branded "the latest 'young Messi'" by FourFourTwo last year. However, Sport have since reported that he's likely to head out on loan next season rather than be promoted to Barca B.

FW: Jordi Mboula

17 of 19

Age: 18

UEFA Youth League minutes 2016/17: 413

Roge: Inconsistent. Capable of producing a moment of magic that shocks the world, or of going missing for stretches at a time. His pace is his biggest weapon.

You should know: You've probably already seen Mboula in action; he's the Barca prodigy who scored that solo goal back in February. Check it out here.

FW: Carles Perez

18 of 19

Age: 19

UEFA Youth League minutes 2016/17: 385

Roge: The most decisive player on the team. He carries the team on his back and scores important goals. Has a great strike with his left foot.

You should know: Perez scored the late winner when Barca downed Manchester City in the group stage and also netted against BVB in the last 16.

FW: Abel Ruiz

19 of 19

Age: 17

UEFA Youth League minutes 2016/17: 349

Roge: One of the most intelligent players in the squad. Always well-positioned, adept in one-on-one situations and always gives everything on the pitch. The smallest player on the team.

You should know: Abel Ruiz was part of a group of five Barcelona youth players who turned down offers to move to the Premier League in 2016, per Sport (in Spanish).
