Derrick Rose Says 'Do I Have a Choice?' About Running Triangle Offense
As the New York Knicks continue their transition to the triangle offense, point guard Derrick Rose is still coming to grips with the change.
Following a team workout Thursday, Rose was asked his thoughts on running the triangle.
"S--t, do I have a choice? Do I have a choice?" Rose said, via ESPN.com. "I just want to win games. Winning takes care of every category for an athlete."
Stefan Bondy of the New York Daily News reported on Tuesday the Knicks were going to start using the triangle, and head coach Jeff Hornacek noted the team would use the season's final two months as an evaluation "to determine which players fit system and which don't," per Bondy.
B/R's Yaron Weitzman noted Knicks associate head coach Kurt Rambis, who also worked on the Los Angeles Lakers' coaching staff when Phil Jackson was head coach, was "heavily involved with teaching (the) triangle" to players.
Expanding on how the transition is going, Rose admitted it's still a learning process for him, per ESPN.com:
"I still don't have the feeling yet of the entire offense, but I pick and choose while I'm out there. You think, 'Don't F up the game.' That's a great way to put it. Just don't mess up the game, and looking at a lot of film, you learn. That's what great players do. I believe that I'm great. Great players find a way no matter what situation they're put in.
"
Rose is having his best season by win shares (1.9) since 2011-12, per Basketball Reference. He's averaging 17.6 points and 4.4 assists per game. The Knicks are a mess overall with a 25-36 record and a roster built around Carmelo Anthony, who is an isolation player.
The upside for Rose, even if he doesn't get a handle on the triangle, is he will be an unrestricted free agent this summer. He's still got 21 games left to prove himself for a Knicks team in desperate need of some kind of spark as the franchise looks toward the future.
