Canelo Alvarez Says Conor McGregor vs. Floyd Mayweather 'Disrespectful'
WBO light middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez has branded a potential Conor McGregor-Floyd Mayweather fight as "a joke."
In a brief interview with TMZ Sports, the 26-year-old Mexican added that a clash between the retired Mayweather and MMA star McGregor would be "disrespectful to boxing."
Talk of a potential fight between McGregor, 28, and Mayweather, 40, has been on the rise of late following several social media exchanges between the pair, as explained recently by AtTheBuzzer:
However, UFC President Dana White told TMZ that "we're nowhere" in relation to the potential superfight, via Jed Meshew of MMA Fighting.
UFC lightweight champion McGregor was granted his boxing license in California back in December, a move that prompted new rumblings he could actually end up fighting Mayweather, per BBC Sport.
Alvarez is not the only one who has criticised the potential clash.
Matchroom Sport promoter Eddie Hearn recently described the idea as "a complete disaster" but acknowledged the attraction of the two superstars coming together, per James Dielhenn of Sky Sports.
Meanwhile, boxing writer Ben Dirs summed up the attitude of many towards the potential bout:
Should Mayweather come out of retirement—he hung up his gloves back in September 2015 with a professional record of 49-0—many would prefer to see him take on a boxer who could actually challenge him like Alvarez.
The pair met in September 2013, with Money inflicting Alvarez's only career defeat to date, winning by majority decision.
