Bennie Logan, Chiefs Agree on Contract

Tim DanielsMar 13, 2017

Veteran defensive lineman Bennie Logan and the Kansas City Chiefs reached an agreement on a contract, the team confirmed on Tuesday.

The Kansas City Star's Terez A. Paylor first reported the deal on Monday. On Tuesday, Tom Pelissero of USA Today reported Logan signed a one-year deal worth $8 million with $7.68 guaranteed.

Logan's impending arrival seemingly signals the Chiefs have abandoned any hope of Dontari Poe returning. Poe remains unsigned, but Kansas City may not have targeted Logan if it still thought it had a chance to retain Poe's services.

Former offensive lineman Geoff Schwartz is a fan of the move:

Logan has served as a stabilizing force along the Philadelphia Eagles defensive line ever since the team selected him in the third round of the 2013 draft.

He's coming off a season where he racked up 24 combined tackles, 5.5 sacks and two forced fumbles across 13 games. In all, he's tallied 163 tackles, 5.5 sacks and three forced fumbles in 59 contests, including 51 starts, across his four years in the NFL.

As is the case with a vast majority of defensive tackles, however, the statistics only tell part of the story. It's not a glamorous position that lends itself to big numbers. Instead, factors like being able to attract double teams to open up other members of the front seven to make plays are crucial to success.

In that regard, Logan provided plenty of value to Philadelphia during his rookie contract. Jeff Kerr of 247Sports passed along an interesting note from the 2016 season that illustrated the tackle's impact:

The defensive tackle stated in December he wanted to remain with the Eagles but admitted the decision wasn't totally in his hands, per Tim McManus of ESPN.

"I want to be here. It's where I've always wanted to be," Logan said. "I feel like I've showed that I deserve to be here, but at the end of the day, some things I can't control. So we'll just see how the ball rolls at the end of the year."

Logan didn't get his wish in the end. Bringing him back would have forced the Eagles to make a much bigger investment after he completed his rookie deal, and they decided to use the resources elsewhere. Trying to fill the void he leaves won't be easy, though.

Meanwhile, the defensive tackle will likely anchor the interior of Kansas City's defensive line. Poe leaves big shoes to fill after establishing himself as one of the better nose tackles in the NFL.
