Pro Bowl 2017: AFC, NFC Voting Results, Selections and Alternates

Tyler ConwayDec 20, 2016

The Dallas Cowboys and New England Patriots have dominated their respective conferences all season. So logic would dictate the 2017 Pro Bowl rosters, announced Tuesday, would be spearheaded by 'Boys and Pats.

Not exactly.

To the surprise of some, it's the Oakland Raiders and Atlanta Falcons who lead their respective conferences in selections for the NFL's All-Star exhibition. The Raiders, who clinched their first playoff berth since 2002 last week, lead all teams with seven selections.

Quarterback Derek Carr, wide receiver Amari Cooper and linebacker Khalil Mack lead the way as proof of the excellent job general manager Reggie McKenzie has done crafting the young roster. Carr had emerged as an outside MVP candidate before tapering off the last two weeks, while Cooper and Mack look like perennial selections at their respective positions.

Offensive tackle Donald Penn, guard Kelechi Osemele, center Rodney Hudson and safety Reggie Nelson will join the aforementioned trio.

The Falcons have an NFC-high six players making the trip, with quarterback Matt Ryan, running back Devonta Freeman and wide receiver Julio Jones leading the charge. Atlanta leads the NFL in scoring and is second in total yards. Jones leads the NFL in receiving yards despite missing the last two games due to injury.

Center Alex Mack, linebacker Vic Beasley and kicker Matt Bryant were also selected.

The Cowboys were among the teams with five Pro Bowl picks, including rookies Dak Prescott and Ezekiel Elliott. Prescott has been one of the NFL's most pleasant surprises, initially filling in for an injured Tony Romo before performing so well he supplanted him altogether. Elliott is one of the best rookie running backs in recent memory, currently carrying a lead of more than 300 yards over the next closest player at his position.

Together, Prescott and Elliott have been the faces of a 12-2 Cowboys team that has returned to prominence after a down 2015. The rookies are joined by offensive tackle Tyron Smith, center Travis Frederick and guard Zack Martin.

The Patriots have four players, led by quarterback Tom Brady. The 39-year-old began his 2016 season firmly planted on the bench for four straight games due to a Deflategate suspension. He's responded by playing some of the best football of his career over the last 10 games, throwing for 3,064 yards and 22 touchdowns against two interceptions.

Without a clear-cut MVP favorite, Brady has burrowed himself into the conversation despite missing a quarter of the season. This is Brady's 12th Pro Bowl selection and his eighth consecutive. No other offensive player will be joining Brady in Florida. Linebacker Dont'a Hightower, safety Devin McCourty and special teamer Matthew Slater were the other Patriots selected.

The Pittsburgh Steelers, meanwhile, have all five of their selections coming on the offensive side. Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, running back Le'Veon Bell, wide receiver Antonio Brown, center Maurkice Pouncey and guard David DeCastro were named to the team.

Chief among the snubs is the entire Detroit Lions roster, which does not have a single selection despite leading the NFC North. New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees was also snubbed despite leading the NFL in passing yards or touchdowns.

Note: Some teams have disclosed their alternates; others have not.

Of course, most know by now to not take the initial Pro Bowl roster 100 percent at face value. Pro Bowl dropouts have become the norm in recent years, with the initial rosters rarely resembling the players who actually make the trip.

Last season, there were 43 players who were selected but were unable to participate for one reason or another. Five of the six quarterbacks were replacement players.

In other words: We're likely going to see Brees and some Lions get their proper due at some juncture. There may even be a few players who get their less than proper due, depending on how many players wind up dropping out. But for now, it's looking like the Year of the Raider.

Who would have ever thought?
