NFL Pro Bowl Snubs 2017: Twitter Reacts to This Year's Biggest Omissions

Kristopher KnoxDec 20, 2016

The rosters for the 2017 NFL Pro Bowl were announced Tuesday night. Players named to the annual all-star game were selected based on a combination of player, coach and fan voting.

As usual, the vast majority of the players picked were wholly deserving. After all, it's difficult to argue with the addition of guys like Tom Brady (109.7 passer rating, 22 touchdowns, two interceptions) and Le'Veon Bell (1,747 combined rushing and receiving yards, seven touchdowns).

Of course, as is also often the case, some players were omitted whom many would consider equally deserving. This is simply how things unfold when a league of 1,700 athletes gets boiled down to two squads of top performers.

Not every great player can get invited to the Pro Bowl in a given season—though they may well end up there after a few rounds of withdrawals—but when a worthy player doesn't get in, someone is going to let you know about it.

Let's take a look at some of the top snubs from this year's Pro Bowl picks, along with some of the top comments from the Twitter world.

First, though, let's take a look at the players who were selected.

Who Got Snubbed?

One notable name absent from the NFC's Pro Bowl roster was Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford. He's passed for 3,720 yards and 22 touchdowns with eight interceptions while helping engineer eight fourth-quarter comebacks.

Yet Stafford—and every other member of the 9-5 Lions—was left off the initial Pro Bowl roster. Naturally, Lions fans are unhappy about this.

Former offensive lineman Geoff Schwartz was upset Green Bay Packers left tackle David Bakhtiari wasn't selected, and he didn't seem to like the lack of right tackles—his brother Mitchell Schwartz plays the position for the Kansas City Chiefs.

Bakhtiari seemed to play well enough to deserve a Pro Bowl nod this year, as Pro Football Focus rated him third among all offensive tackles.

Pro Football Focus rated New York Giants defensive tackle Damon Harrison fifth at his position, but his 80 tackles, 1.5 sacks and one forced fumble weren't enough to get him a Pro Bowl nod.

Unfortunately for future opponents, Harrison was the one who appears perturbed by the perceived snub.

Buffalo Bills inside linebacker Zach Brown didn't seem too pleased he was left off the Pro Bowl roster, either. Considering he was rated eighth by Pro Football Focus among inside linebackers and has 130 tackles, four sacks, two forced fumbles and an interception, Brown might have a point.

On the other hand, New England Patriots running back LeGarrette Blount didn't seem like he felt disrespected by being omitted. Instead, he took the opportunity to congratulate some of the guys who did get the call.

But Blount has already racked up 1,060 yards and an NFL-best 15 touchdowns on the ground, so it shouldn't be a surprise that not everyone took his exclusion quite as calmly.

Sean Lee, a star linebacker and one of the top contributors on the Dallas Cowboys defense, also missed out. This, despite the fact he has 140 tackles and one pass defended.

Fans and local media weren't the only ones upset about Lee. Fellow Cowboys linebacker Andrew Gachkar said Lee's snub hurt the credibility of the Pro Bowl.

New Orleans Saints running back Mark Ingram had a similar opinion about the absence of teammate and pass-rusher Cameron Jordan.

Jordan has amassed 54 tackles, 6.5 sacks, a forced fumble and five passes defended. Pro Football Focus rated him first among all 4-3 defensive ends.

Of course, Jordan wasn't the only notable Saints star to miss out on an initial Pro Bowl invitation. Quarterback Drew Brees was also passed over—in favor of Matt Ryan, Aaron Rodgers and Dak Prescott.

Brees has passed for 4,559 yards with 34 touchdowns and has a completion percentage of 71.1. Detractors will point out Brees is leading a 6-8 team, while guys like Rodgers and Prescott have their squads on the brink of the postseason.

Yet, if the Pro Bowl is strictly an individual honor, it's difficult to agree with the omission of Brees.

Of course, these are only the initial rosters. Players will get injured, and those who reach the Super Bowl won't participate, so these squads are going to change quite a bit. So, there's a chance the snubbed player you think was most deserving will be playing in the Pro Bowl.
