David Johnson Posts NFL-Record 14th Straight Game with 100+ Scrimmage Yards

Bleacher Report MilestonesDec 20, 2016

Arizona Cardinals running back David Johnson finished Sunday's game with 53 rushing yards and 55 receiving yards. In doing so, Johnson became the first player in NFL history to produce at least 100 scrimmage yards in 14 consecutive games to start a season, per NFL Communications.

He broke a tie with Edgerrin James, who amassed 100-plus scrimmage yards 13 straight times to begin his final season with the Indianapolis Colts in 2005.

Johnson's outing on Sunday also tied him with Pro Football Hall of Fame running back Marcus Allen for the second-longest such streak at any point in a single season. He has a chance to tie Detroit Lions great Barry Sanders—who did so 15 straight times in 1997—next week against the Seattle Seahawks.

In an odd additional milestone, Johnson also passed 20 career rushing touchdowns (now owns 21) in Sunday's game against the Saints. The effort made him just the second player in NFL history with at least 20 rushing touchdowns, five receiving touchdowns and a kickoff return touchdown in the first two seasons of his career. Former Chicago Bears tailback Gale Sayers was the only player to previously accomplish the feat.

Despite Johnson's performances this season, the Cardinals have floundered a year after making the NFC Championship Game. Arizona currently holds a 5-8-1 record and has been eliminated from playoff contention.

The team also has veterans at a couple of important offensive positions who could be nearing the end of their respective careers.

Quarterback Carson Palmer turns 37 on Dec. 27 and star wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald is now 33 years old. While neither has really displayed signs of his age, Fitzgerald did suggest in an interview with Westwood One's Jim Gray on Monday night (via the team's official site) that he's uncertain whether he will play again in 2017.

Johnson sits on the other end of that spectrum, turning just 25 years old last Friday. When some of the veterans do hang up the cleats, the second-year back's contributions out of the backfield may have an even larger impact on the Cardinals' future success.
