Marshall was among the NFL players who openly protested during the national anthem by kneeling prior to games earlier this season, but heย announcedย in November he was ending his protest after multiple meetings with the Denver Police Department:
"For the 1st half of the season, I've been taking a knee for the National Anthem to raise awareness for social injustice and to start conversation about what all of us can do to make a positive change. I'm encouraged with the many productive discussions and progress that has taken place as the Denver Police department has decided to review its use of force policy. I'm proud to have joined so many of my peers throughout sports who've also made their own statements.
"
Marshall emphasized things were still not perfect in the United States, but he would stand during the national anthem "because of my hope for what we can become."
This marks the second publicized incident of racism against an NFL player this week. New York Giants fullbackย Nikita Whitlock toldย WCBS-TVย in New York on Wednesday burglars broke into his New Jersey apartment and left racist graffiti, including a swastika and the letters "KKK" on the walls.ย
The 27-year-old Marshall has played the last four seasons of his NFL career with the Broncos, winning a Super Bowl with the team in February.ย
