Former San Francisco 49ers defensive end Larry Roberts died Monday, per the team's official website. He was 53 years old.

After being selected in the second round of the 1986 draft, Roberts spent his entire eight-year NFL career in San Francisco. The defensive end played in 89 games and finished his career with 28 sacks.

Roberts won back-to-back Super Bowls following the 1988 and 1989 seasons.

He started every game for the 1988 team, finishing the year with six sacks and adding 2.5 more sacks in the playoffs. While he lost his starting job to Pierce Holt during the 1989 season, Roberts still made an impact while playing in 15 games for a team that many consider to be one of the best ever.

The talented pass-rusher also tallied a sack in the team's 55-10 blowout win over the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XXIV.

Before joining the NFL, Roberts played college football for the Alabama Crimson Tide.

According to Jarrett Bell of USA Today, Roberts had several health problems stemming from diabetes, including having both legs amputated.
