Zinedine Zidane Says Real Madrid 'Lacked Everything' After 3-3 Legia Warsaw Draw

Rory MarsdenNov 3, 2016

Zinedine Zidane slammed his Real Madrid side for the loss of "intensity, movement [and] enthusiasm" that saw them throw away a 2-0 lead to draw 3-3 with Legia Warsaw in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday.

Gareth Bale netted a stunning strike in the first minute of action at the Polish Army Stadium—almost empty after UEFA sanctioned Legia for crowd trouble—and Karim Benzema doubled Real's lead 10 minutes before half-time.

Los Blancos were cruising, but goals from Vadis Odjidja, Miroslav Radovic and Thibault Moulin then required a late strike from Mateo Kovacic to earn the Spanish giants a point in Poland.

Zidane criticised his team for losing control of the game from such a strong position but said, in the end, he was glad they got the draw, per Reuters (via MailOnline):

"

When you score two goals away from home you normally have things under control but in the end we let our opponents back into the game.

Once they got the first goal back it became difficult for us. We lacked everything—intensity, movement, enthusiasm. Sometimes you get games like this and we now have to be patient. The good thing is we didn't lose.

"

Real were suspect defensively for much of the match, hardly surprising given Zidane was forced to field a makeshift back four.

However, the turnaround could still have been prevented.

Legia's goals were all excellent, but Odjidja was allowed far too much time and space for their first, while Real goalkeeper Keylor Navas should have done better to keep out Radovic's strike, per Eurosport UK:

Zidane, though, was loath to blame his defence, per Reuters (via MailOnline): "It wasn't the worst game in defence. We started well and scored twice, but if you don't maintain the necessary intensity to continue playing, well it's difficult. After the second goal, we dropped our intensity. I'm happy with our defence because it's not just a question of our defenders."

A victory against Legia would have confirmed Real's spot in the last 16 of the 2016-17 Champions League.

While they remain a shoo-in for the knockout rounds with two group-stage matches remaining, they are in danger of coming second to Borussia Dortmund and potentially drawing a tougher last-16 opponent.

Following a clash with Sporting CP later in November, December's final group game, against BVB at the Santiago Bernabeu, could prove crucial to Real's prospects of successfully defending the Champions League.

If they cannot leapfrog the German outfit into top spot and consequently draw a top team in the last 16, Wednesday's poor performance against Legia will likely be held responsible.
