Geno Smith Injury Update: Jets QB Suffered Torn ACL vs. Ravens

Joseph ZuckerOct 24, 2016

New York Jets quarterback Geno Smith will miss the rest of the 2016 season after tearing his ACL, Jets head coach Todd Bowles told reporters Monday.

Bowles confirmed a report from NFL Media's Ian Rapoport earlier in the day, adding that Ryan Fitzpatrick will start in Smith's absence against the Cleveland Browns on Sunday.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that Smith will visit Dr. James Andrews for a second opinion Tuesday.

"It sucks," wide receiver Brandon Marshall told reporters after the news. "It sucks for Geno, and it sucks for our team."

The injury could signal the end of Smith's time in New York. The 26-year-old is in the final year of his deal, and the Jets are unlikely to sign him after what have been four disappointing seasons.

The team selected Smith in the second round of the 2013 draft to be its franchise QB. In 33 games, he has thrown for 5,962 yards, 28 touchdowns and 36 interceptions.

Fitzpatrick's struggles this season provided Smith with one last chance to prove himself worthy of the starting job. Instead, his 2016 campaign is over just one week after it began.

Kimberley A. Martin of Newsday detailed how Smith's career has met numerous roadblocks over the last year:

The 33-year-old has thrown a league-leading 11 interceptions, and on Sunday night, he publicly vented about his problems with members of the organization, according to Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News:

"

The biggest thing in this game in order to last, is to have belief in yourself. Because when the owner stops believing in you and the [general manager] stops believing in you and the coaches stop believing in you, sometimes all you have is yourself. That's something that I've had to deal with before. That's something I'm dealing with now.

"

If Bowles wants to go in a different direction, the Jets have Bryce Petty and Christian Hackenberg on the roster. Neither has appeared in an NFL regular-season game.

Sunday's win snapped a four-game losing streak for New York. Should the team's fortunes take a nosedive once again, starting Petty or Hackenberg might be a good idea, if only to see whether either can be a long-term option.
