GoldandBlack.com noted Young was in tears as he was carted off the field on Saturday.
Young leads Purdue in catches (29) and receiving yards (338) through the team’s 3-2 start. He also has one touchdown catch.
The senior was in the midst of a breakout campaign. He only previously registered stats in 2015, when he hauled in just 21 catches for 276 yards and a score.
The Boilermakers haven’t made a bowl since 2012 and need to win three of their remaining seven games to become eligible to snap that streak. It will be more difficult without their top receiver, but Stacy Clardie of GoldandBlack.com pointed to a handful of potential replacements.
Senior Bilal Marshall has already proven himself as a versatile playmaker who can line up in the slot or out wide or even serve as a Wildcat quarterback in certain looks. Elsewhere, freshman Terrance Landers and special teams contributor Malik Kimbrough are other candidates to fill in for the injured Young.
Purdue’s next two games come against Iowa and Nebraska. The Hawkeyes are 20th in the nation in passing yards allowed per game, while the Cornhuskers are 31st. Purdue will likely be hard-pressed to move the ball through the air against those stingy secondaries without one of its best offensive weapons.
