Vikings Defense Holds Odell Beckham to Career-Low Receiving Total
The Minnesota Vikings defense held New York Giants star wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. to a career-low 23 receiving yards in Monday night's 24-10 victory for Minnesota, per ESPN Stats & Info. Beckham's previous low came in Week 6 of his rookie 2014 campaign when he totaled just 28 yards receiving against the Philadelphia Eagles.
Beckham's breakout rookie campaign started late due to hamstring injuries, holding him to just 12 games. That didn't stop him from posting 1,305 receiving yards and 12 touchdowns on 91 receptions, highlighted by one of the greatest catches in NFL history.
While many rookies suffer through a sophomore slump, Beckham excelled in his second go-around. He was able to compete in 15 games last season and totaled 1,450 yards receiving yards and 13 touchdowns on 96 grabs.
Beckham started 2016 on a similar path, recording 280 receiving yards through the first three weeks before he was derailed by a Vikings defense that's put together an impressive resume thus far.
Minnesota has beaten the likes of Aaron Rodgers, Cam Newton and Eli Manning in the past three weeks. What's more impressive, the Vikings had gone nearly 85 minutes without allowing a point prior to Giants kicker Josh Brown's field goal late in the second quarter of Monday's game.
The defense has carried the Viking to a 4-0 record despite season-ending injuries to starting quarterback Teddy Bridgewater and star running back Adrian Peterson. In the process, they've managed to allow the fewest amount of points through four games since their 1988 season, per ESPN Stats & Info.
The NFC remains relatively open, with two of the early favorites—the Arizona Cardinals and Carolina Panthers—stumbling out of the gate. Both the Giants and Vikings stand a chance to make the playoffs in 2016. In order to do so, New York will likely need continued production from Beckham moving forward, while Minnesota will likely continue relying on the team's elite defense.
