Doug Baldwin, Seahawks Teammates Meet with Seattle Police Department
Wide receiver Doug Baldwin and some of his Seattle Seahawks teammates met with members of the Seattle Police Department on Monday as part of Baldwin's continued involvement in social activism.
According to Bob Condotta of the Seattle Times, an SPD spokesperson confirmed the meeting but did not reveal the exact nature of what was discussed.
The meeting occurred after Baldwin announced his intention to open up the lines of communication in September, per Condotta:
"At this very moment, we're scheduling a meeting with the mayor of Seattle, with police chiefs across the country, across the state I should say, and we're discussing ways to just start discussion. That's the first step, is to have communication. We need to know the perspective of other people. The greatest tragedy for any human being is going through their entire lives believing the only perspective that matters is their own. We need to break down those walls and barriers and get people to see that there's perspectives outside of their own eyes.
"
Following San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick's decision to protest during the national anthem by initially sitting and then kneeling, Baldwin expressed support for his stance on social media.
The Stanford alumnus then took his involvement one step further by organizing a national anthem demonstration prior to Seattle's Week 1 win over the Miami Dolphins, which saw every Seahawks player lock arms during the singing of "The Star-Spangled Banner."

Baldwin's Monday meeting was of significance since the primary topic of discussion with regard to Kaepernick's protest has been the recent shooting deaths of African-Americans by police officers.
Many players across the NFL have joined Kaepernick's anthem protest, such as Denver Broncos linebacker Brandon Marshall, Miami Dolphins running back Arian Foster and Philadelphia Eagles safety Malcolm Jenkins.
Baldwin is taking a slightly different approach, and it is one that is opening up dialogue.
