Josh Gordon Reportedly Released from Rehab Facility

Adam WellsSep 29, 2016

Cleveland Browns wide receiver Josh Gordon announced on Sept. 29 he would enter an inpatient rehabilitation facility.

ESPN's Adam Schefter, citing league sources, reported on Sunday morning that Gordon has been released from the facility following a 30-day stint.

"

It is said to be the most intensive treatment that he has gone through, and Gordon is said to be doing "a lot better," one source said.

Gordon is now waiting for the NFL to determine whether he can rejoin his Browns teammates at their training facility, and whether he will be reinstated for the remainder of this season.

For the time being, Gordon remains suspended, and it will be that way until and if the league decides to reinstate him, which could -- or could not -- happen at any time.

The Browns tweeted official statements from Gordon and Sashi Brown, the team's executive vice president of football operations, regarding the initial decision for Gordon to attend rehab:

Tom Pelissero of USA Today provided additional comments from Gordon:

The 25-year-old had been serving a four-game suspension as part of his conditional reinstatement by the NFL after sitting out all of last season for his third violation of the league's substance abuse policy. NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, citing sources, reported Sunday that "Gordon entered rehab after what was described to me as a 'slip-up,' a potential violation of drug and alcohol policy."

Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com, citing a league source, reported on Oct. 2 that "Gordon checked himself into rehab for an alcohol problem."

"Our concern is with Josh's well-being," NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy said, per Cabot. "We will decline comment on his status with the team."

"We're moving on," Browns head coach Hue Jackson told reporters on Sept. 30. "We need to close that chapter right now."

Field Yates of ESPN reported on Oct. 3 that Gordon would remain on the reserve/suspended list until further notice.

The Browns selected Gordon in the second round of the 2012 supplemental draft. He appeared in all 16 games as a rookie, leading the team with 805 receiving yards and five touchdowns.

Despite serving a two-game suspension to start the 2013 season, Gordon led the NFL with 1,646 receiving yards and 117.6 receiving yards per game. He earned a trip to the Pro Bowl and first-team All-Pro honors for his efforts.

In 2014, Gordon played only five games, as he served a 10-game suspension for another violation of the league's substance abuse policy. The Browns also suspended him for the final game of the regular season for a violation of team rules.

After being reinstated in July, Gordon took to Twitter to thank the people who have helped him:

"

I'm blessed and grateful to be granted this opportunity. I can’t wait to get back out there and play the game I love in front of the great fans of Cleveland. I want to thank the NFLPA, Commissioner Goodell, the Haslam family and Browns organization, my agent Drew Rosenhaus, as well as my mentors for their continuous support along the way. I've heard only good things from my teammates about the positive direction the organization is heading and I want to do everything I can to be there to help further that process not only for the team but to better myself as well. Thank you.

"

After the announcement on Sept. 29, Rapoport noted Gordon's future with the Browns "is seriously in doubt."

Though he's one of the league's most dynamic wide receivers when he's on the field, Gordon's off-field issues have cost him a lot of games.
