Minor Leaguer Zach Welz Dives over Outfield Fence to Steal Home Run
Andrew GouldAug 25, 2016
Minor leaguer Zach Welz went all out to prevent a home run on Wednesday night.
Playing for the Los Angeles Angels' Double-A affiliate, the Arkansas Travelers outfielder dove over the wall to rob Tulsa's Cody Bellinger of a two-run homer.
The play-by-play announcer couldn't believe it, calling a home run before slowly realizing what had unfolded.
As NBCSports.com's Craig Calcaterra noted, it was a successful duplicate of the play Torii Hunter attempted to make during the 2013 American League Championship Series. Except he fell shy of catching David Ortiz's game-tying grand slam.
Welz is hitting just .188 (9-for-48) in 18 Double-A games, but he has now filed a worthwhile submission for catch of the year.
