Medal Count 2016 Olympics: Latest Reaction and Standings for Saturday Results
With the opening ceremony of the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro in the rearview, the Games were in full swing Saturday.
One event is already in the books, with the USA striking gold first. Virginia "Ginny" Thrasher, a 19-year-old freshman from West Virginia University, won the women's 10-meter air rifle competition. China's Du Li and Yi Siling won silver and bronze, respectively.
The USA shooting team's Instagram account captured a moment with the winner and the Rio Games' mascot afterward.
Thrasher started shooting just five years ago when she took up the rifle for a hunting trip with her father and brother, per NBC's Matthew Micali.
"The West Virginia native burst onto the competitive shooting scene in 2015 when she took home five medals at the USA Shooting National Championships.
As a freshman at West Virginia University, Thrasher led the Mountaineers to their 18th NCAA team rifle championship, and also won individual titles in smallbore and air rifle.
Thrasher only got her start in shooting five years ago when she asked to join her father and brother on a hunting trip.
"They didn't think I was going to pull the trigger," Thrasher said. "They didn't think I could kill a deer."
"
With Thrasher's early victory, the USA leads the medal count on Day 1. Of course, plenty of events are set to wrap up over the course of the next two weeks, but it doesn't hurt to land the first punch.
Several other events kicked off Saturday, including canoeing, cycling, water polo and swimming.
The American men's water polo team dropped its first game to Croatia, which won gold at the 2012 Games in London. USA Water Polo shared the score and photos from the matchup.
Dana Vollmer and Kelsi Worrell, meanwhile, qualified for the women's 100-meter butterfly semifinals, which will be held Saturday night. The USA Swimming team's Twitter account had the news.
Men's basketball also got started on Saturday, as two teams loaded with NBA players faced off. Of the 10 starters for the game between Australia and France, nine are currently in the league.
