Dez Bryant Sues Former Financial Adviser: Latest Details, Comments, Reaction
One month after getting sued by his former financial adviser, Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Dez Bryant filed a countersuit Tuesday.
According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, the superstar wideout sued Royce West, alleging the Texas state senator was both negligent and fraudulent as a means to profit from Bryant's fame and fortune.
Per Rapoport, Bryant's lawsuit states West and another former member of Bryant's team, David Wells, essentially used the Pro Bowler's brand to embezzle funds: "Then, West would instruct endorsement companies and others to make payments for any endorsement agreements to Wells, not Bryant. Many of these payments stopped at Wells and/or West but never reached Bryant."
It is alleged in the suit Wells owes Bryant over $200,000 and that West owes $300,000 due to actions taken by his law firm. Bryant is also seeking additional damages along with the money he believes he is owed, per the lawsuit: "Such malicious and reckless conduct justifies an award of exemplary damages in addition to the actual damages incurred by Bryant for which it seeks recovery."
"These allegation are lies and frivolous," West said to Clarence Hill of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. "Mr. Bryant needs to take responsibility for the damage done to my house and not attempt to avert focus away from his actions by making incredulous accusations against me. I intend to file a defamation suit against Mr. Bryant and his attorney for these accusations."
Per the lawsuit, Bryant claims that he is owed more than $200,000 by former advisor David Wells and that West breached fiduciary duties by taking $300,000 from him.
Bryant's decision to sue West comes after West filed a suit against the former Oklahoma State standout for allegedly causing $60,000 in damage to a rental home in DeSoto, Texas, according to Tom Steele of the Dallas Morning News. West is seeking between $100,000 and $200,000 from Bryant.
The 2010 first-round pick is coming off his worst NFL season, as he set career lows with just 31 receptions for 401 yards and three touchdowns. He missed seven games due to injury and was largely ineffective when he did play due to the absence of quarterback Tony Romo.
Bryant produced at least 88 receptions for 1,233 yards and 12 touchdowns in each of the previous three campaigns and will look to regain his status as one of the NFL's elite pass-catchers while Dallas attempts to bounce back from a last-place finish in the NFC East as well.
