Jeff Van Gundy Clears Up a Mystery About O.J. Simpson Car Chase
Many sports fans likely remember the 1994 NBA Finals for the seven-game thriller between the Houston Rockets and New York Knicks.
Many probably also remember those Finals for a certain famous slow-speed car chase. During Game 5, O.J. Simpson and the white Ford Bronco gripped America as the Rockets and Knicks faced off at Madison Square Garden.
After ESPN aired a promo for its five-part documentary O.J.: Made in America during Game 4 of the 2016 NBA Finals on Friday night, commentator Jeff Van Gundy broke out a tremendous story.
Van Gundy was an assistant under Knicks head coach Pat Riley in 1994. According to his story, Riley encountered Al Cowlings, Simpson's friend and driver of the Bronco, in Los Angeles shortly after the chase.
According to Van Gundy, the reason Cowlings drove so slowly was: "O.J. wanted to hear the end of the game on the radio before he pulled in."
It's all hearsay, of course, and may or may not be true. Either way, that's one remarkable story.
