Vardy Leaning Towards Nixing Arsenal Move

Sunday, June 19

BBC Sport's David Ornstein reported Vardy is "set to reject Arsenal and stay at Leicester," but that a final decision has not yet been made.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger stated on Saturday that Vardy would not transfer to Arsenal, per Tencent:

Vardy Decision Reportedly Delayed

Tuesday, June 7

Vardy is expected to make a final decision after England's participation at Euro 2016 is over, per Matt Law of the Telegraph. Ornstein originally reported a decision was due on Monday.

John Cross and James Nursey of the Daily Mirror reported on the same day that Wenger is "braced for disappointment" in his attempt to land Vardy. Cross and Nursey noted Wenger believes Vardy "would have accepted Arsenal's offer by now if he was keen to move to the Emirates [Stadium]."

Giroud Comments on Vardy

Sunday, June 5

"I have been told that Jamie wants to join us and it's very good news for us," Arsenal's Olivier Giroud told Sky Sports News HQ on Saturday (h/t Sky Sports' Nick Lustig). "I think we can be complimentary [sic] and that's all I can say." He continued:

"

He's a fantastic player, so it's good news for us.

As I said in the past I am happy with competition. We have always had fantastic strikers at Arsenal and I want the best for this club. Hopefully he is going to help us win this title.

The boss wanted to sign at least one or two strikers, so I expected a top striker and I think it will benefit the club and hopefully he is going to score a lot of goals like he did at Leicester.

Ranieri Confirms Arsenal Bid

Saturday, June 4

When asked whether the Gunners had triggered the forward's £20 million release clause, Foxes chief Ranieri told Italian newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport (h/t the Sun's Alec Shilton): "It's all true."

According to the report, Vardy will undergo a medical with Arsenal on Sunday, rushed along so the player can then concentrate on his Euro 2016 campaign with England, beginning on Saturday.

Vardy Poised to Cash In on Breakout Season

Speculation over Vardy's future has been rife since the striker's form led Leicester to last season's Premier League title triumph, and broadcaster Stan Collymore has said the move will be a good one:

Except for Leicester, that is, as the Foxes look set to lose out on arguably the most important player of their title tilt. The hope will be Vardy's potential departure will prove a sole case.

Sky Sports News HQ highlighted it wasn't long ago that England striker Vardy had suggested his loyalty remained with Leicester, the club that gifted him his break into the top flight:

However, football writer Tom McDermott took note of the monetary boost the player is sure to see from a move to the Emirates Stadium, likely a huge factor in his reported decision to move:

The Gunners have been linked with a bevy of strikers since failing to land any senior outfield players in the summer of 2015, with Giroud unable to garner faith in his ability to lead their line.

Bleacher Report's Sam Tighe did, however, note Vardy, 29, may be something of a short-term solution to Arsenal's attacking woes given what is arguably his biggest asset could soon decline:

Vardy's switch to Arsenal is far from complete, although Ranieri's comments appeared somewhat concrete in asserting his star striker will join the Gunners this summer.

Both teams will appear in the group stage of next season's UEFA Champions League, and after triggering his release clause, Arsenal are within inches of signing last season's Football Writers' Association Footballer of the Year.
