As always, however, the highlight of the race through the streets of San Francisco was the various costumed and extravagant runners. Bay to Breakers is as legendary for the party that accompanies it as it is for the race itself, after all.
There were men in banana suits, per Scott Strazzante of the San Francisco Chronicle:
There were celebrations of two-time NBA MVP Stephen Curry and the Golden State Warriors—last year's champions and the team that set an NBA record by going 73-9 this season—per Evan Sernoffsky of the San Francisco Chronicle:
There were fish running upstream, per Sernoffsky:
Who wouldn't want a bit of wine?
And where else do you see this outside of perhaps a Halloween party (via Connor Radnovich of the San Francisco Chronicle)?
That's just a small taste of the colorful and clever costumes and gimmicks the various racers, walkers and viewers donned throughout the day.
The race has been a staple of San Francisco since 1912, and over 40,000 registered runners signed up for this year's event, per Barnard. The day culminates in the Bay to Breakers Finish Line Festival at Golden Gate Park, with food and live entertainment throughout the rest of the day, according to Stephen Ellison and Gillian Edevane of NBCBayArea.com.
A little racing and a little partying. In San Francisco, it's a tradition quite unlike any other.
