Oscar De La Hoya Calls Out Gennady Golovkin After Canelo Alvarez Knockout
After Saul "Canelo" Alvarez left Amir Khan lying in the middle of the ring with a vicious sixth-round knockout Saturday night in Las Vegas, promoter Oscar De La Hoya threw down the gauntlet at undefeated champion Gennady Golovkin (35-0).
Per ESPN.com's Arash Markazi, De La Hoya told Golovkin he will be giving him a call in the morning:
Per ESPN.com's Dan Rafael, De La Hoya added that negotiations with Golovkin's camp "will happen behind closed doors, and when we come to an agreement we will let everyone know."
Fans have talked about a potential fight between Canelo and Golovkin for a long time. Rafael noted in December that representatives for the two star boxers met and agreed each would have one buffer fight before an expected bout between them takes place in September.
Golovkin already handled his business in the buffer fight, destroying Dominic Wade within two rounds April 23. He was sitting back and waiting for the results of Saturday's fight, which Canelo won, and responded with this tweet:
Alvarez played the tough-guy role in the ring after knocking out Khan.
"I will fight [Golovkin] right now," he said, per USA Today's Mike Coppinger. "Let’s put the gloves on and get in there with him."
A bout between the two fighters won't be guaranteed until they sign a contract, but at least De La Hoya is saying what he must in order to put the pressure on Golovkin's camp.
