Canelo Alvarez Waves Gennady Golovkin into Ring After Knocking Out Amir Khan

Brian MarronMay 7, 2016

After taking out Amir Khan on Saturday, Canelo Alvarez looked toward Gennady Golovkin and invited him into the ring, according to ESPN's Arash Markazi.

“Like we say in Mexico, we don’t f--k around," Alvarez said after calling GGG into the ring, per Bad Left Hook (warning: NSFW language). "I don’t fear anyone.”

Alvarez had just knocked out Khan with a vicious right hand to keep his WBC middleweight title, adding to the push for Alvarez to make Golovkin his next opponent, per Markazi:

Before the fight, Golovkin seemed to be anticipating a future showdown with Alvarez:

Although Golovkin is undefeated (35-0), Alvarez claimed Wednesday that the two-belt middleweight champion is undeserving of being a mandatory bout because he has fought weak opponents.

"Fighting the type of opponents [Golovkin] fought a couple weeks ago, come on, that's not going to bring this fight," he said, per Lance Pugmire of the Los Angeles Times.

ESPN.com's Dan Rafael suggested Alvarez should be mandated to fight Golovkin since the latter also holds an interim belt. However, Rafael described Alvarez and his promoter, the legendary Oscar De La Hoya, as being "evasive" about honoring an agreement they made with the WBC to fight Golovkin.

If Alvarez chooses not to fight, he will be stripped of his belt.

According to Rafael, Alvarez has cited concerns over fighting Golovkin at 160 pounds after fighting five straight times at 155 pounds.

Alvarez was the heavy favorite to come out victorious Saturday, so the focus will now shift to a bout with Golovkin. Boxing is all about generating interest toward its next big fight, and it looks like Alvarez-Golovkin is on its way to becoming another premier faceoff.

Alvarez does not have much to gain by avoiding Golovkin. If he declines, he will face heavy criticism, damage his reputation and lose his belt. If he fights and defeats Golovkin, he will be the undisputed middleweight champion.

The decision should be obvious.
