John Cena Comments on Why He Isn't a Fan of MMA
A handful of WWE Superstars have gravitated toward mixed martial arts over the last few years. Don't expect John Cena to be one of them.
In a recent interview on Larry King Now, the 15-time champion discussed why he prefers professional wrestling to MMA.
"It's done great to establish itself as a brand, but in comparison with us, it doesn't resonate with me just because I'm a storyteller," said Cena (via FoxSports.com's Damon Martin). "I enjoy the story that we can tell in the ring and like I said, I think we do it better than everyone."
To a certain extent, Cena's comments echo what Brock Lesnar told Dari Nowkhah on SportsCenter (via MMAjunkie's Brent Brookhouse) last August. He made the point both UFC and WWE promote fights, with one representing a real physical altercation and the other a more theatrical presentation.
"The business model is the same; it's identical," Lesnar said. "I think Vince McMahon's better at it than [UFC President Dana White], and that might rub Dana the wrong way. Vince is the pioneer of it. He's been doing this his whole life, and he's damned good at it."
WWE has unquestionably perfected what it takes to create a grand spectacle. The company made $17.3 million in revenue from WrestleMania 32 alone, with 101,763 fans packing inside AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
