Aaron Colvin Suspended 4 Games: Latest Details, Comments and Reaction

Joseph ZuckerApr 8, 2016

The NFL suspended Jacksonville Jaguars cornerback Aaron Colvin for four games for a violation of the league's policy on performance-enhancing drugs Friday, per Ryan O'Halloran of the Florida Times-Union.

General manager Dave Caldwell released a statement regarding the suspension, per Tad Dickman, the Jaguars' senior manager of public relations:

"

We have been aware for some time of the impending suspension on Aaron Colvin. We are disappointed in this situation, but we know this is not indicative of Aaron's character or the type of person that he is. We will be supportive of him and we stand by him as he takes the proper steps to overcome what transpired. Nobody is more disappointed than Aaron himself.

Colvin also released a statement:

"

I made a mistake and I will take responsibility for it. I apologize to my family, the Jaguars organization, especially my coaches and teammates, as well as the Jaguars fans that have been supportive of me since I was drafted here in 2014. I will learn from this. I will grow from this. I will be a better man and player from this. I will not let this define me and I will overcome this. Thank you.

"

Colvin appeared in all 16 regular-season games for the Jaguars in 2015, making 73 combined tackles and picking up four sacks. O'Halloran posited that Jacksonville signed Prince Amukamara in anticipation of Colvin missing time. Even if he were available to start the year, Amukamara almost certainly would've started ahead of him.

Colvin's suspension might also warm Caldwell to the idea of selecting a cornerback early in the draft. Jacksonville has the No. 5 overall pick, so Florida State's Jalen Ramsey probably won't be an option. Clemson's Mackensie Alexander, Ohio State's Eli Apple and Florida's Vernon Hargreaves III will likely be available, though, or Caldwell could target a defensive back in the second or third round.

The timing of Friday's announcement leaves the team with some time to fill out the secondary ahead of training camp.
