WWE WrestleMania 2016: Full Match Card and Feuds Guaranteed to Electrify Fans
Much of the noise regarding WWE WrestleMania 32 has been about the event's potential failings or what disappointments await fans, but the event boasts a number of potential classics.
Top-flight performers playing parts in strong stories will lead WrestleMania to outshine many expectations. Crackling chemistry and hungry young wrestlers will result in feuds producing stellar results.
Forget that Roman Reigns is entangled in an ongoing fight with the audience. Forget that Shane McMahon vs. Undertaker is riddled with plot holes. Focus instead on the Divas Championship match, AJ Styles' WrestleMania debut and the no-rules slobberknocker waiting to happen.
These are the stories that will most ensnare fans come April 3. These are the bouts that will be the backbone of WrestleMania 32.
Match Card
1 of 5- Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royal
- Intercontinental Championship ladder match
- The Usos vs. The Dudley Boyz
- The Total Divas vs. B.A.D. and Blonde
- AJ Styles vs. Chris Jericho
- The New Day vs. The League of Nations
- Charlotte vs. Becky Lynch vs. Sasha Banks (Divas Championship)
- Kalisto vs. Ryback (United States Championship)
- Dean Ambrose vs. Brock Lesnar
- Shane McMahon vs. Undertaker (Hell in a Cell)
- Triple H vs. Roman Reigns (WWE World Heavyweight Championship)
A glut of injuries forced WWE to shift its WrestleMania plans. The result is a card minus John Cena, Randy Orton, Cesaro, Seth Rollins and Daniel Bryan.
It's hard to blame the company for the undercard featuring so many subpar battles. The tag bouts lack fire. They feel like filler rather than compelling stories that must reach their climax at the biggest show of the year.
The Battle Royal is hurt by a lack of depth. Neville and Luke Harper are among those who could have been battling for the Andre the Giant Trophy but are instead on the lengthy injured list. That leaves The Social Outcast, Kane and Big Show to play bigger roles than WWE likely wanted.
Still, the undercard is not without its gems. For one, AJ Styles and Chris Jericho going at it once more promises to be special.
Styles-Jericho IV
2 of 5This showdown has been in the works since AJ Styles' first match on Raw. WWE has patiently crafted the story of Styles' rivalry with Chris Jericho, letting the opponents' relationship evolve, allowing their animosity to fester.
When they first battled, they did so warily but still respectful of each other. Jericho and Styles then became allies and tag team partners before morphing into full-fledged rivals.
In the process, Jericho slid into a villainous role, and the veteran was immediately energized by the transformation. He has done some of his best work in years as jealousy continues to eat at him, as he struggles to prove his superiority over Styles.
And each time these two have met in the ring, it has resulted in can't-miss action. Their first three clashes have shown off their great chemistry. At WrestleMania, that promises to lead to a memorable conclusion to this personal war.
Styles will have plenty to prove as a longtime TNA star looking to show he belongs on WrestleMania's grand stage. And even with several steps lost since his prime, Jericho is a proven big-match performer.
Together, they will set the bar high for the rest of the card.
The Chase for Kevin Owens' Championship
3 of 5The Intercontinental Championship ladder match certainly feels like a bout where WWE just crammed in several midcarders to help get the entire healthy portion of the roster on the WrestleMania card. Why Sin Cara and Zack Ryder are in contention for a championship all of a sudden is hard to understand.
Still, this will undoubtedly be a massive amount of fun.
The stipulation itself will lead to some jaw-dropping spots. It will be the car crash of WrestleMania, its least cerebral and most visceral bout.
Jim Ross believes that the IC title match should go on first as a way to kick-start WrestleMania. Ross wrote on his blog, "Go steal the show while the audience is hot and eagerly anticipating the thrill show presentation."
Beyond the energy and danger that Kevin Owens' title defense promises, there are some key subplots that will power the matchup. Sami Zayn and Owens have been battling since their days at Ring of Honor. This acts as an extension of their NXT feud, a bone thrown to the diehard fans who have followed their careers.
Ryder's surprise resurgence of late will be worth watching, too. He went from hanging around backstage with nothing to do to pinning Chris Jericho and potentially closing in on his first IC title reign. Should he get his fingertips on the gold, it will be a stirring moment.
Add the talent of guys like Dolph Ziggler and Stardust, and there is little doubt that this match will leave a lasting impression.
The Women Make History
4 of 5No other match will make the kind of history that Charlotte's defense of the Divas Championship against Becky Lynch and Sasha Banks will at WrestleMania.
The Showcase of the Immortals has largely ignored women throughout the years. Many of the cards haven't included a single women's match. And despite the Divas Championship being around since 2008, this will be only the second time that the title will be defended at the marquee event.
Last time around, the battle for the belt was a mess. The entire division collided in the Vickie Guerrero Divas Championship Invitational.
This time around, three top talents are set to get a prime spot on stage.
The narrative of this feud has been simple: Banks and Lynch are hungrily chasing the title. The former allies are now focused on proving that each is the best, that each deserves to reign as champion.
Each woman is representing both NXT and an entire gender. Aside from Mickie James vs. Trish Stratus at WrestleMania 22 and Wendi Richter vs. Leilani Kai at the very first WrestleMania, there has barely been a women's bout at The Show of Shows that has made much of an impact.
That is set to change.
There's a buzz surrounding this contest that we haven't seen before. Miami Herald writer Scott Fishman tweeted, "Can't remember when [I] was this excited about [a] women's match at #WrestleMania. Becky, Sasha and Charlotte has potential to be really good."
Fishman may be underselling it here. We have seen these women produce great matches, and now that they are getting to ply their trades on wrestling's biggest stage in a match that could redefine the role of women in WWE, we should all expect something tremendous.
Beast vs. Lunatic
5 of 5Brock Lesnar vs. Dean Ambrose doesn't need a world championship or the control of the company to be at stake. WrestleMania's No Holds Barred Street Fight will be the apex of a well-executed feud that promises to feel like the event's true headlining act.
This simple-and-smart narrative has been clicking from the get-go. Ambrose is the fearless madman tempting the king of the jungle. He has been a revelation as he has stood up to The Beast Incarnate, wearing a wry smile and wielding an array of weapons.
When they meet, compelling chaos will fill the squared circle. Ambrose's courage and Lesnar's savagery will power a memorable clash of popular stars.
This is the biggest bout of Ambrose's career and his shot to truly catapult himself onto a higher tier.
When John Cena took over the Complex Sports Twitter account for a recent Q&A, he named Ambrose vs. Lesnar as the match most likely to steal the show. It's hard to argue with Cena here.
Ambrose has been on a tear of late. Lesnar is one of the best performers in wrestling history. Together, they will compose a symphony of violence and rage that will be remembered long after WrestleMania is done.
