Brock Lesnar Is an Afterthought in WWE Fastlane 2016 Main Event
Brock Lesnar went all Brock Lesnar on Roman Reigns and Dean Ambrose on SmackDown. An F-5 here, a German suplex there, and when the dust settled, an aggressive tease that he was coming for Triple H's WWE World Heavyweight Championship at WrestleMania.
But that's probably not going to happen.
Despite his prominence in the WWE food chain, Lesnar winning at Fastlane is among the least likely scenarios.
Throughout the build, he has been the third wheel of a storyline that's more about a deteriorating brotherhood than a No. 1 contender three-for-all.
In fact, the most telling part of his sweeping attack on Reigns and Ambrose came when he dodged a Reigns Spear, which instead connected with Ambrose. Ambrose came back with an attempt at Dirty Deeds and was later thwarted by his "brother."
It was quite telling that the post-match brawl didn't develop any substance until Lesnar stepped out of the way.
That's been the overarching theme of the upcoming Fastlane main event. Ambrose is battling a little-brother complex as the smallest man in this fight. He's trying to prove his toughness by taking beatings on a weekly basis, and he faces the tall task of upstaging his longtime ally to earn a spot in the WrestleMania main event.
The dynamic is leading to tension between the two, which is fracturing their relationship. A heel turn might not be too far away.
Somewhere in between, Lesnar will hit a half-dozen suplexes, but that's about the extent of his involvement.
The budding Wyatts-Lesnar rivalry has also diluted Lesnar in his current Fastlane feud.
Lesnar dominated a nice chunk of the Royal Rumble before being eliminated by The Wyatt Family. Since then, a Wyatt-Lesnar storyline of some sort seems to be a strong possibility for WrestleMania. A recent report from PWInsiderElite.com (h/t Wrestling Inc) added fuel to these rumors.
On Monday's Raw, WWE aired several vignettes of the Wyatts taking out the "titans" of WWE. With Lesnar fitting the description as one of these titans, it seems like only a matter of time until the Wyatts will attack him next.
There's really no reason for Lesnar to be in this feud. It'll be another platform for him to take a loss of some sort. As a part-timer who blurs the lines of reality with his mixed martial arts style, losses hurt Lesnar more than most.
It makes more sense for The Authority to pit Ambrose against Reigns in a one-on-one match as a Machiavellian plan to destroy their friendship.
Despite being in a Triple Threat match, the Ambrose-Reigns dynamic is dominating the storyline. Lesnar is just there to keep Fastlane interesting. But as somewhat of a lame-duck competitor in a main event for a title he doesn't need, Lesnar has been reduced to an afterthought.
