Kalisto vs. Alberto Del Rio: Winner and Reaction from WWE Fastlane 2016
Kalisto proved Sunday night at WWE Fastlane that his recent success wasn't a fluke, as he defeated Alberto Del Rio once again to retain the United States Championship in a 2-out-of-3 Falls match.
The WWE Universe provided a photo of the finish:
Former WWE star Lance Storm praised the match:
Robert Littal of BSO wonders if this should mark the end of the Kalisto-Del Rio feud:
Over the past several weeks, Kalisto and Del Rio have locked horns on several occasions and traded the U.S. title back and forth.
Kalisto originally scored an upset victory over Del Rio to take the strap on Raw, but Mexico's Greatest Export managed to get it back just a few days later on SmackDown.
That led to yet another match at the Royal Rumble pay-per-view, which the Lucha Dragons member won to become United States champion for the second time.
Despite losing the belt to Kalisto on two occasions, Del Rio continued to downplay the former NXT tag team champion leading up to Fastlane. He claimed that Kalisto's victories were based purely on luck and that he would become a three-time U.S. titleholder by defeating the masked Superstar Sunday.
Del Rio also fired a warning shot in the direction of Kalisto on Twitter in the days leading up to Fastlane:
Kalisto and Del Rio have displayed fairly good chemistry in the ring over the course of their feud, and while their match at Fastlane was solid, it didn't seem to have many WWE fans excited due to the fact that they had already faced each other so many times in the week leading up to it.
Also, WWE has done little to make the United States Championship feel important since John Cena dropped it to Del Rio at Hell in a Cell in October, which certainly hasn't helped matters.
Kalisto came out on top once again Sunday night, and while that is a positive in terms of continuing to build the 29-year-old Superstar into a new version of Rey Mysterio, the Creative team must find a way to capitalize on the momentum.
One can only assume his rivalry with Del Rio is over, but it is unclear who may come next. A singles match with the United States Championship on the line at WrestleMania seems unlikely, but a multi-man ladder match like the one involving the Intercontinental Championship last year isn't out of the question.
Kalisto shined in that environment at TLC when he performed one of the top spots of the year with a Salida del Sol off a ladder. If he can have a similar moment at WrestleMania, then that may finally provide the true boost he has been lacking.
Locking horns with Del Rio was a good first singles feud for Kalisto in terms of getting his feet wet in that capacity, but if WWE truly wants to establish him, then it's undoubtedly time from him to move on to something bigger.
