National Signing Day 2016: 5-Star College Football Recruit Tracker

Tyler DonohueFeb 2, 2016

National signing day has arrived, and it's time to discover where America's most impressive high school football players plan to attend college. Thousands of recruits will seal deals with their signatures on Wednesday, and many have already announced their intentions.

The spotlight will be squarely focused on the country's coveted 5-star players, who earned elite status with sustained success at the prep level and present immense potential to help alter the fortunes of programs for years to come. More than half of the 25 composite 5-star prospects committed to schools prior to signing day, and some already enrolled for the spring semester.

For those who remain undecided, this final stretch has undoubtedly been a demanding and stressful time. It's not only been hard on them, but on their families and the collegiate coaches who've invested so much time in pursuing them as well. Here's a look at the signing day outcome for every 5-star recruit in the 2016 class, with updates occurring throughout the day.

Player order based on appearance in 247Sports composite rankings.

OLB Caleb Kelly

1 of 25

High School: Clovis West (Fresno, California)

Size: 6'3 ¼", 215 lbs

Composite Ranking: No. 3 outside linebacker; No. 25 overall

College Status: Signed with Oklahoma

Caleb Kelly was bound to leave California, with Oregon and Notre Dame factoring into his group of finalists. The Sooners were long viewed as a favorite to land his signature and that speculation came to fruition with a signing day announcement.

His ability to provide impressive pass coverage at linebacker makes him a rare fit for potential three-down duties as a true freshman. In 2015, he won the Butkus Award, which goes to America's top high school linebacker, after amassing 115 tackles and 21 sacks in his senior season.

DT Benito Jones

2 of 25

High School: Wayne County (Waynesboro, Mississippi)

Size: 6'2", 285 lbs

Composite Ranking: No. 6 defensive tackle; No. 24 overall

College Status: Enrolled at Ole Miss

Benito Jones is one of few 5-star talents who got an early jump on collegiate action by enrolling early. He began receiving scholarship offers shortly after his freshman year and briefly pledged to the Alabama Crimson Tide in July 2014 before flipping to Ole Miss approximately one month later.

He emerged as an elite lineman during his sophomore season, when he compiled 58 tackles, 25 quarterback hurries and five sacks, according to MaxPreps. Jones established career-high production as a senior, securing 83 tackles and seven sacks.

DT Rashard Lawrence

3 of 25

High School: Neville (Monroe, Louisiana)

Size: 6'3", 305 lbs

Composite Ranking: No. 5 defensive tackle; No. 23 overall

College Status: Signed with LSU

Rashard Lawrence focused on finalists Ohio State and LSU before his Jan. 22 announcement ceremony, opting to stick with his home-state Tigers. He also reciprocated interest from UCLA, Washington and Alabama along the way.

“It was LSU for a lot of reasons. The key reason was being able to talk to [Tigers defensive coordinator Dave] Aranda,” Lawrence told Monroe news station KTVE (h/t Ross Dellenger of the New Orleans Advocate. “I’ve always liked the school, but he showed me some things that I liked. That’s what it came down to.”

He recorded 91 tackles—15 for loss—and eight sacks as a senior, according to Dellenger.

CB Jack Jones

4 of 25

High School: Long Beach Poly (Long Beach, California)

Size: 5'11", 164 lbs

Composite Ranking: No. 3 cornerback; No. 22 overall

College Status: Signed with USC

The nation turned its attention to a 5-star standout from Long Beach Poly for a third straight signing day, and once again it was USC that stole the show. Jack Jones follows fellow program products Iman Marshall and JuJu Smith-Schuster to the Trojans.

The two-way standout caught 11 touchdowns at wide receiver last season, but he's expected to spend his college career in the defensive secondary. Jones is also an effective kick returner and could make an impact on special teams before he gets a chance to shine as an every-down defender in coverage.

CB Kristian Fulton

5 of 25

High School: Archbishop Rummel (Metairie, Louisiana)

Size: 6'0", 177 lbs

Composite Ranking: No. 21 overall; No. 2 cornerback

College Status: Signed with LSU

It came down to a three-way SEC showdown for lauded Louisiana defensive back Kristian Fulton, who spent his final official visit at Florida last weekend and also considered Arkansas. The Tigers were considered a slight favorite down the final stretch and sealed the deal on signing day.

Fulton, considered the No. 1 overall prospect in Louisiana this cycle, collected 58 tackles and six interceptions as a senior, according to the New Orleans Advocate. He was named to the Advocate's All-Metro Team and earned Defensive Player of the Year honors in 2014.

RB Miles Sanders

6 of 25

High School: Woodland Hills (Pittsburgh)

Size: 5'11", 199 lbs

Composite Ranking: No. 1 running back; No. 20 overall

College Status: Signed with Penn State

Miles Sanders emerged as America's only composite 5-star rusher following his third straight 1,000-yard rushing effort and impressive performances at prospect showcases. He pledged to Penn State shortly before his junior season and remained steadfast in his decision even as other programs, specifically Michigan State and Pittsburgh, continued their pursuit.

He rushed for 1,523 yards and 16 scores in his senior season, according to Brad Everett of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, bringing his total high school output on the ground to 4,573 yards and 59 touchdowns. Sanders' breakaway ability was on full display in 2015, when he averaged 11.2 yards per carry.

DE Jeffery Simmons

7 of 25

High School: Noxubee County (Macon, Mississippi)

Size: 6'3 ½", 277 lbs

Composite Ranking: No. 3 strong-side defensive end; No. 19 overall

College Status: Signed with Mississippi State

Though Jeffery Simmons spent his final official visit at Ole Miss, he's headed to Starkville. Mississippi State secured a substantial recruiting victory over the Rebels and Alabama, adding him to the mix on signing day.

Simmons surged up national recruiting rankings as an upperclassman, tallying more than 100 tackles as both a junior and senior, per MaxPreps. He totaled 212 tackles—35 for loss—during the past two seasons, and tormented opposing quarterbacks en route to 34 sacks in that span.

DE McTelvin Agim

8 of 25

High School: Hope (Hope, Arkansas)

Size: 6'2 ½", 268 lbs

Composite Ranking: No. 2 strong-side defensive end; No. 18 overall

College Status: Enrolled at Arkansas

The Razorbacks managed to seal up the state borders and secure the most impressive recruit on home turf in McTelvin Agim. Baylor, Ole Miss and Texas A&M also factored into his decision, which was announced in September.

Agim is a fierce defender off the edge who can manhandle opponents or use elite quickness (4.62 seconds in the 40-yard dash, per Richard Davenport of the Arkansas Democrat) to stifle offensive efforts. He was nothing short of dominant in 2015, compiling 75 tackles, 34.5 sacks, nine pass breakups and an interception, according to Davenport.

OT Jonah Williams

9 of 25

High School: Folsom (Folsom, California)

Size: 6'5", 296 lbs

Composite Ranking: No. 2 offensive tackle; No. 17 overall

College Status: Enrolled at Alabama

Jonah Williams opted for a future in Tuscaloosa during his junior year, spurning the proximity of multiple Pac-12 programs, including Oregon and USC. He arrived at Alabama in January and may ultimately be looked at as the heir apparent at left tackle when former 5-star recruit Cam Robinson leaves campus.

A supremely athletic and coordinated blocker, Williams spent part of his high school career protecting quarterback Jake Browning, who set a national record for career touchdown passes and now plays at Washington. This dominant bookend is prepared for the high-level physicality it will take to compete in the SEC trenches.

DE Oluwole Betiku

10 of 25

High School: Junipero Serra (Gardena, California)

Size: 6'3 ½", 240 lbs

Composite Ranking: No. 1 weak-side defensive end; No. 16 overall

College Status: Enrolled at USC

The recruiting pipeline between Junipero Serra High School and USC has been extremely rewarding for the Trojans in recent years. The addition of Oluwole Betiku, who previously pledged to UCLA, further solidifies that sentiment and gives first-year USC defensive coordinator Clancy Pendergast a prodigious pass-rusher to develop.

Betiku, who emigrated from Nigeria midway through high school, made a monumental impact in just two seasons at the Los Angeles-area powerhouse. He flourished in an unfamiliar sport, securing 129 tackles—52 for loss—and 28.5 sacks as an upperclassman.

OLB Lyndell Wilson

11 of 25

High School: Carver (Montgomery, Alabama)

Size: 6'2", 220 lbs

Composite Ranking: No. 2 outside linebacker; No. 15 overall

College Status: Signed with Alabama

Nick Saban and the Crimson Tide secured another in-state stalwart depite the best efforts of former Alabama defensive coordinator Kirby Smart, who recruited Lyndell Wilson on behalf of Georgia. The Bulldogs fell short as a fellow finalist, while Florida was also eliminated in late stages of this chase.

Wilson, a finalist for the Butkus Award (top linebacker), enjoyed the finest campaign of his career in 2015. He tallied 115 tackles—18 for loss—and five sacks as a senior, according to MaxPreps.

WR Demetris Robertson

12 of 25

High School: Savannah Christian Prep (Savannah, Georgia)

Size: 5'11 ¾", 175 lbs

Composite Ranking: No. 1 wide receiver; No. 14 overall

College Status: Considering Alabama, Georgia, Notre Dame and Stanford

Demetris Robertson's recruitment has been a relatively difficult one to project, considering his sustained interest in multiple programs. There's also an SEC dynamic to this race, as Alabama is aiming to bring the former Crimson Tide pledge back into the fold and Georgia wants to keep its prized in-state target home.

Momentum may be on Notre Dame's side, though, with the Fighting Irish now tied with Georgia in terms of expert predictions on Robertson's commitment. Robertson is considered a two-way threat in college and managed to impact contests in a variety of ways during his senior season (1,043 rushing yards, 41 tackles, two interceptions and 13 touchdowns, per MaxPreps).

ATH Mecole Hardman Jr.

13 of 25

High School: Elbert County (Elberton, Georgia)

Size: 5'10", 169 lbs

Composite Ranking: No. 1 athlete; No. 13 overall

College Status: Signed with Georgia

Mecole Hardman Jr. may make a name for himself as a wide receiver. Or defensive back. Or kick returner. Or all three.

The Peach State dynamo is scintillating in space and attacks opponents with an aggressiveness not often seen by prospects of his stature. He chose the in-state Bulldogs from a collection of finalists that included Alabama, Clemson, Michigan, Ohio State and Tennessee.

Hardman, who named the Crimson Tide his leader earlier this winter, represents a pivtoal pickup for the new Georgia regime. He burst onto the national scene as a sophomore with 2,208 total offensive yards and 18 touchdowns, according to MaxPreps.

TE Isaac Nauta

14 of 25

High School: IMG Academy (Bradenton, Florida)

Size: 6'3 ¼", 244 lbs

Composite Ranking: No. 1 tight end; No. 12 overall

College Status: Enrolled at Georgia

It wasn't easy, but the Bulldogs ultimately bagged this home-state star Jan. 9 during the U.S. Army All-American Bowl. Isaac Nauta, who transferred out of Georgia for his senior high school season, opted to stay local after seriously considering fellow finalists Michigan and Alabama.

Nauta, one of the most complete tight end prospects we've scouted this decade, does damage as a run-blocker and can make tough catches with consistency while running crisp routes. He initially pledged to Florida State as a junior but backed off that verbal commitment last summer.

LB Mique Juarez

15 of 25

High School: North (Torrance, California)

Size: 6'1 ½", 231 lbs

Composite Ranking: No. 1 outside linebacker; No. 11 overall

College Status: Signed with UCLA

Coveted linebacker Mique Juarez, the 2015 Los Angeles Times Player of the Year, took long looks at potential SEC landing spots Alabama and Ole Miss but opted to stay in his home state. He previously pledged to USC before backed off that verbal commitment upon the dismissal of former head coach Steve Sarkisian.

Juarez racked up 146 tackles and five sacks as a senior, named a finalist for the Butkus Award (nation's top high school linebacker). He also totaled 60 touchdowns during a dominant season, showing off a scintillating skill set on offense.

LB Ben Davis

16 of 25

High School: Gordo (Gordo, Alabama)

Size: 6'3", 240 lbs

Composite Ranking: No. 1 inside linebacker; No. 10 overall

College Status: Signed with Alabama

Ben Davis—the second Alabama linebacker on this list to warrant consideration as a 2015 finalist for the Butkus Award—was long considered a slam dunk to join the reigning national champions. His father, Wayne Davis, is the all-time tackles leader in Crimson Tide history, and expectations will be high when he arrives on campus this summer.

The long-limbed defender displays enough range to wreak havoc along the perimeter and handles himself well in pass coverage. Davis also used official visits at Auburn, Georgia, LSU and Notre Dame but opted to create a family legacy at Alabama.

DT Derrick Brown

17 of 25

High School: Lanier (Buford, Georgia)

Size: 6'3 ¾", 317 lbs

Composite Ranking: No. 4 defensive tackle; No. 9 overall

College Status: Signed with Auburn

Derrick Brown maximized his official visit opportunities in late 2015, closely examining schools where staff alterations defined part of the process. An SEC-centric recruitment centered on Alabama, Auburn, Mississippi State, Tennessee and his home state Georgia Bulldogs.

Brown adds yet another explosive defensive lineman to the mix for Tigers coaches to implement right away. He registered 42 tackles for loss and 12 sacks as a senior.

DE Nick Bosa

18 of 25

High School: St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale, Florida)

Size: 6'4", 265 lbs

Composite Ranking: No. 1 strong-side defensive end; No. 8 overall

College Status: Signed with Ohio State

The Bosa bloodline remains strong in Columbus, as Nick will arrive shortly after his older brother Joey's NFL draft departure. This "little" bro plays immensely physical football, with a hard-charging motor that may remind many of the man whose shoes he's attempting to fill along the Buckeyes defensive front.

Bosa weighed offers from Florida and Florida State before opting to move beyond state borders with a midsummer commitment to head coach Urban Meyer. He validated his 5-star potential as a junior, when he collected 30 tackles for loss and five sacks for a state championship St. Thomas Aquinas squad.

CB Levonta Taylor

19 of 25

High School: Ocean Lakes (Virginia Beach, Virginia)

Size: 5'11", 182 lbs

Composite Ranking: No. 1 cornerback; No. 7 overall

College Status: Signed with Florida State

Levonta Taylor took himself off the market last April with a pledge to the Seminoles and spent the next several months serving up evidence Florida State likely secured America's most electric defensive back. Prior to his pledge, the playmaker considered opportunities at Auburn, Florida, Notre Dame, Ole Miss and USC, among several other universities.

Taylor, who plays with plenty of confidence and backs it up with consistent elite-level performance, is an absolute game-changer in a number of ways. He scored six non-offensive touchdowns in 2014, according to MaxPreps, putting opponents on high alert as a kick returner and ball hawk.

DT Ed Oliver

20 of 25

High School: Westfield (Houston, Texas)

Size: 6'2", 277 lbs

Composite Ranking: No. 3 defensive tackle; No. 6 overall

College Status: Signed with Houston

Ed Oliver may have pulled off the surprise of this recruiting cycle in May, when he committed to the Cougars over a list of contenders that included LSU, Michigan, Texas A&M and Oklahoma. His pledge occurred well before Tom Herman earned himself a contract extension with Houston's remarkably successful 2015 season.

Houston, which also holds a commitment from top-rated Texas wide receiver Tyrie Cleveland, could put the pieces together for an improbable College Football Playoff run in the coming years, with Oliver joining a roster that also welcomes No. 1 overall 2014 quarterback recruit Kyle Allen from Texas A&M.

QB Jacob Eason

21 of 25

High School: Lake Stevens (Lake Stevens, Washington)

Size: 6'5 ½", 208 lbs

Composite Ranking: No. 2 pro-style quarterback; No. 5 overall

College Status: Enrolled at Georgia

Jacob Eason pledged to the Bulldogs in July 2014, but his commitment came into question following the departure of longtime Georgia head coach Mark Richt. Despite a late official visit with the Florida Gators and interest from in-state Washington, Eason stuck with his plan to play in Athens following a strong push from new Georgia head coach Kirby Smart and offensive coordinator Jim Chaney.

The Bulldogs struggled to gain consistency through the air last season, and Eason is a strong contender for a starting position in 2016. He was recognized as the Gatorade Player of the Year and U.S. Army All-American Player of the Year after a senior campaign that included 3,585 passing yards and 43 touchdown tosses.

QB Shea Patterson

22 of 25

High School: IMG Academy (Bradenton, Florida)

Size: 6'1 ½", 192 lbs

Composite Ranking: No. 1 pro-style quarterback; No. 4 overall

College Status: Enrolled at Ole Miss

Shea Patterson punctuated his prep career with an MVP performance in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl, adding to a trophy case that includes an Elite 11 MVP. He won two state titles at Calvary Baptist Academy in Louisiana as a sophomore and junior before transferring to national powerhouse IMG Academy in 2015.

His recruitment started early and included a freshman-year commitment to Arizona, which failed to last until his junior year. Patterson, who accounted for 140 total touchdowns and just 14 interceptions in high school, pledged to Ole Miss last February and is now on campus.

OT Greg Little

23 of 25

High School: Allen (Allen, Texas)

Size: 6'5 ½", 305

Composite Ranking: No. 1 offensive tackle; No. 3 overall

College Status: Signed with Ole Miss

Greg Little served as an anchor at offensive tackle during multiple state-title runs with Allen High School during his prep career, protecting 5-star 2015 quarterback recruit Kyler Murray. As his physical frame grew through recent seasons, he managed to maintain the athleticism and lateral agility that sets him apart from so many contemporaries at the position.

Texas A&M managed to land a commitment from Little in 2014, when Murray appeared to be the future of a dynamic Aggies offense. However, Murray transferred to Oklahoma and Little is now headed to Ole Miss after considering opportunities at Auburn, Alabama, Georgia and LSU.

DT Dexter Lawrence

24 of 25

High School: Wake Forest (Wake Forest, North Carolina)

Size: 6'4", 327 lbs

Composite Ranking: No. 2 defensive tackle; No. 2 overall

College Status: Enrolled at Clemson

The Tigers made a major mid-December splash with a commitment from Dexter Lawrence, who enrolled on campus just a few weeks later. He chose Clemson over a slew of contenders that included Alabama, Florida, NC State and Ohio State.

"Dexter is the country's best defensive recruit," Tigers wide receiver commit Cornell Powell told Bleacher Report before last season.

Lawrence certainly did his part to back up that statement, securing 91 tackles—21 for loss—and 13 sacks as a senior, according to MaxPreps. His interior pass-rushing prowess is impressive, resulting in 28 sacks since 2013.

DT Rashan Gary

25 of 25

High School: Paramus Catholic (Paramus, New Jersey)

Size: 6'5", 293 lbs

Composite Ranking: No. 1 defensive tackle; No. 1 overall

College Status: Signed with Michigan

Wolverines head coach Jim Harabugh wrapped up his first full recruiting cycle at Michigan with the biggest fish in the pond. Rashan Gary, who received his first scholarship offer months before he entered high school, chose the Wolverines over fellow finalist Clemson, while Auburn, Ole Miss and USC also received official visits.

Former Paramus Catholic head coach Chris Partridge is now a member of the Wolverines staff and played a pivotal role in this recruitment. Gary becomes the sixth New Jersey product to join Michigan's class, which includes multiple close friends.
