Okafor Subject of String of Recent Issues
Monday, Nov. 30
This follows a string of off-court incidents that have come to the surface in the past week. On Sunday, Keith Pompey of the Philadelphia Inquirer reported Okafor was pulled over in early November for driving 108 mph in a 45 mph zone on the Ben Franklin Bridge in Philadelphia. Gonzalez also reported Okafor had a gun pointed at him during a dispute outside of a Philadelphia club in early October.
On Thanksgiving, TMZ released a video of Okafor getting into a fight outside of a Boston club early that morning:
Sixers head coach Brett Brown addressed the string of incidents Sunday, per John Finger of CSN Philly:
"As an organization, anything like this is concerning. I think the repetitiveness on the announcement exacerbates the problem. It's like any 19-year-old kid, you are trying to find ways to help him. He's knows he's made mistakes and we know he's made mistakes. As an organization we will deal with them as we need to and should.
"
Okafor has been excellent on the court, averaging 17.5 points, 8.2 rebounds and 1.6 blocks per game. But his recent pattern of behavior is a major concern for the Sixers, who assuredly want their franchise cornerstone focused on basketball and staying out of trouble off the court.
The Sixers have an extremely young roster, and one of the concerns going forward is that the team doesn't have much of a veteran presence. While the Sixers are trying to build through the draft with young, talented players, it may be imperative to surround them with a few veterans who can offer guidance and wisdom.
