It's considered a Grade 2 sprained ankle, but Davis does not have a fracture, according to injury expert Will Carroll.
Wells said he saw Davis leave the locker room with a cast on his right foot. An ankle doctor told Zak Keefer of the Indianapolis Star, "If it was a small tear, he probably wouldn't be in a cast."
Davis Is Vital to Colts Defense
Davis had some close calls in 2015, despite not missing a game. He suffered a concussion in Week 2 against New York but was cleared through the NFL's protocol to return in time for Week 3 against Tennessee.
Though he's overshadowed while playing for an offense-first franchise, Davis is a linchpin for Indianapolis' secondary. He finished sixth on Pro Football Focus' list of the top 100 players for 2014.
Last year didn't go as well for Davis, though he still finished 29th among all NFL cornerbacks with a 79.6 coverage grade, per Pro Football Focus.
The 28-year-old remains one of the few bright spots on the Colts defense. There are problems in Indianapolis, but Davis' absence will shine a brighter light on all of them because a shutdown defensive back is hard to find and even more difficult to replace.
