Meyer Speaks on Decision to Suspend Barrett, QB's Status on Team

Meyer spoke to reporters Monday, telling them he made the decision to suspend Barrett, adding the quarterback will also "forfeit his scholarship for a 'term.'" Ohio State later clarified Barrett's summer aid was what was revoked, not his tuition, via Ryan Cooper of The Lantern.

As for further punishment, Meyer said he asked other members of the team whether Barrett should lose his captaincy, but the players said the quarterback should remain a captain. However, Meyer said he's "still debating it."

Meyer also told reporters the incident makes him "question Barrett's decision-making."

"J.T. is going to have to deal with something he's never had to deal with," Meyer added, saying he told Barrett "now there are some questions of who you are."

Date for Barrett's Court Appearance Revealed

Eric Seger of Eleven Warriors reported that Barrett "is scheduled for a court date Friday morning at 9 a.m., according to Franklin County Court records." Seger continued:

The report also shows a charge of "backing without safety" against Barrett, who was driving a vehicle with a Texas license plate. Barrett is from Wichita Falls, Texas. According to Ohio code, "backing without safety" refers to a subject violating section 2921.331 of the Revised Code or any ordinance "prohibiting the willful fleeing or eluding of a law enforcement officer."

Friday's date could be pushed back, and is just the first appearance in front of a judge for Barrett, 20. The amount of time it takes for the case to be closed is unknown.

The court record also shows an open balance of $97 against Barrett for booking, $39 for state fees for moving violations and $58 for his imminent court appearance.

Barrett's Off-Field Issue Could Affect On-Field Status 

The incident came one week after Barrett made his first start of the season against Rutgers. He shined in the contest, completing 14 of 18 passes for 223 yards and three touchdowns in a 49-7 victory. He also gained 101 yards and scored twice on the ground after taking over for Jones, who had started the first seven games for the Buckeyes.

Barrett's strong showing made it likely that he'd keep his name atop the depth chart for the Minnesota game, but the incident pushed the team's quarterback situation back into turmoil, albeit temporarily.
