College Football Top 25 Week Three: USC Upset, Miami Is Back, and BYU Loses

Tyler StimsonSep 19, 2009

What a wild week of college football! Now here is my top 25:

1. Florida - Did not dominate Tennessee the way people thought they would, but their defense looks great. A win is a win, and they won 23-13.

2. Texas - Texas Tech kept the game close, but Texas avoided a repeat of last years dramatic loss, winning 34-24.

3. Alabama - Looking like one of a number of teams that could face Florida in the SEC championship game.

4. California - Had a solid non-conference win on the road against Minnesota. And with USC's loss may be the odds on favorite to win the Pac-10.

5. Mississippi - Dominated another cupcake opponent.

6. LSU - That win in Washington looks a lot better now.

7. Penn State - Dominated another cupcake opponent.

8. Boise State - Defense got a little exposed against the best (arguably) two loss team in the country (Fresno State), but winning by 17 at Fresno is very impressive.

9. Miami - Is finally back in the top 10, after dominating Georgia Tech on Thursday night.

10. Oklahoma - A second consecutive shutout, this one against the top offense (statistically) in the nation last year. This defense looks special. If Oklahoma runs the table they still have a great shot at a title game appearance.

11. USC - Suffered a close, tough loss against Washington. Maybe they suffered from a post Ohio State hangover. Maybe Washington is tougher than we thought. Maybe it was Barkeley's injury. We will have to see how they respond.

12. Ohio State - Dominated Toledo 38-0 after coming just short against USC.

13. TCU - After a slow start, dismantled Texas St. easily, 56-21.

14. Houston - Took the week off, but have a big game against Texas Tech next week.

15. Cincinnati - Has an impressive road win, 28-18, over Oregon State.

16. Florida State - I don't know if I've ever seen an offense dominate a game the way Florida State did. They could not be stopped, piling up 300 yards rushing against what was supposed to be a good BYU defense.

17. Virginia Tech - Had an exciting 80 yard pass play with 1:11 left to set up their last touchdown, beating Nebraska 16-15.

18. Oklahoma State - Beat cupcake Rice 41-24.

19. Kansas - Destroyed Duke 44-16.

20. Michigan - Sustained their momentum from last weeks exciting victory, with a 45-17 victory over Eastern

21. Missouri - Beat cupcake Furman 52-12, Michigan.

22. North Carolina - Tops East Carolina 31-17.

23. BYU - Their team was exposed against Florida State. They had five turnovers, and zero defensive stops in the first half. All of this happened in Provo, where BYU hadn't lost in three years. FSU is certainly much better than people thought, but BYU is also not nearly as good as people expected. That being said, they still have great shot at a BCS bowl if they can run the table.

24. Oregon - Stopped the nations longest winning streak by beating Utah.

25 (1) Nebraska - Lost a heart breaker to Virginia Tech.

25 (2) Washington - Why not? Their only loss is a close one to No. 6 LSU. And they just beat USC.
