Arsenal Transfer News: Latest on Daniele Rugani and David Ospina Rumours

James DudkoOct 10, 2015

Arsenal are ready to take advantage of Daniele Rugani's lack of playing time with Serie A giants Juventus. The Gunners also risk losing backup goalkeeper David Ospina if he doesn't get more starting opportunities.

First, manager Arsene Wenger will turn his attention toward Rugani. The 21-year-old Italian defender is "frustrated and increasingly desperate to be given more of an opportunity to display his obvious talents" in Turin, according to Spanish website Fichajes.net (h/t Metro's Tom Olver).

Apparently, Arsenal's competition for Rugani's signature will come from Juve's Italian top-flight rival Napoli. In all honesty though, the Gunners don't really have a major need for Rugani.

For a rare time in the last decade, Wenger's squad is actually well-stocked in defensive areas. The centre-back pairing of Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker is experienced and competent. As a bonus, Brazilian Garbriel looks like a rising star since signing from La Liga outfit Villarreal in January.

Wenger's also placed a lot of faith in England youngster Calum Chambers. The 20-year-old is versatile enough to operate either at full-back or in the middle.

Yet this is far from the first time the Gunners have been linked with Rugani. Back in July, Forza Italian Football and TuttoSport (h/t Daily Telegraph) noted how Wenger was ready to make a second bid for the player Juve were considering selling for around £13 million.

Gabriel is developing into a key member of Arsenal's defence.

In late September, Calciomercato (h/t Sport Witness) reported Rugani is "more than happy" to move to England's top flight. With Koscielny 30 and Mertesacker 31, Wenger may feel signing Rugani is the best way to refresh the ranks.

Ospina Ready to Move On

Upset at losing his place to summer arrival Petr Cech, Ospina is ready to move on. That's according to the Sun (h/t Daily Star reporter Rhys Turrell).

Apparently, the Colombian stopper will seek pastures new if he's not handed a start for Arsenal's upcoming UEFA Champions League clash with Bayern Munich:

"

Manager Arsene Wenger reportedly told Ospina he would be guaranteed regular action in Europe to make up for losing his regular starting spot to Cech.

But he's now said to be considering going against his word and keeping the ex-Chelsea man between the sticks for the crucial clashes with Bayern.

"

Wenger controversially dropped Cech for the Gunners home tie with Olympiakos. A 3-2 defeat, featuring a gaffe from Ospina, indicted that decision.

Ospina has had his struggles in Europe this season.

Cech publicly defended the call during an interview with SkySports.com's Patrick Davison: "I believe the manager has full faith in the team he picks and, as player, you have to accept his decision."

Although Ospina has struggled at times since Cech's arrival, Arsenal would rue losing such a quality second choice. Cech is definitely an upgrade on those who've tended goal for the Gunners in recent years, but a squad pushing for major trophies needs two capable stoppers to help navigate a long season.

While keeping both happy is a difficult balancing act, Wenger has to get it right. Having a pair of top-notch 'keepers will make a major difference to Arsenal across four competitions.

Wenger may end up feeling that way about adding a talented young defender to an already much-improved back line. While it never hurts to have extra options, the Gunners won't miss much if they don't make a move for Rugani.
