Baron Corbin Is Ideal Fit to Align with Roman Reigns and Dean Ambrose

Ryan DilbertSep 7, 2015

Adding Baron Corbin to their squad is just the countermove to The Wyatt Family welcoming Braun Strowman that Roman Reigns and Dean Ambrose need.

The tattooed, snarling NXT powerhouse most certainly has his flaws, but he's an excellent fit alongside what is left of The Shield. He is built for the enforcer role that potentially awaits him. He offers WWE a chance to insert a fresh face into this storyline while protecting a raw prospect.

For weeks now, Reigns and Ambrose have found themselves outnumbered. They went from battling Bray Wyatt to now tangling with a fearsome posse that also includes Luke Harper and Strowman. That is set to change, though.

WWE announced on its official website that The Wyatt Family would collide with Reigns, Ambrose and "a partner of their choosing."

Corbin is possibly that mystery partner. As noted on Wrestle Zone, several fans sent the site a photo reportedly taken from WWE.com that depicted Corbin as Reigns and Ambrose's third man.

Whether this is a case of WWE letting a secret slip or misinformation spreading across the Internet, Corbin is the right choice.

While officials have some other potential options in front of them, either some wishful thinking is required to see certain Superstars join Ambrose and Reigns or they just don't conform to the story and scenario quite as well as The Lone Wolf.

Baron Corbin bowls over Tyson Kidd.

Both Randy Orton and Cesaro represent the best bets in terms of known commodities at this point. Without much going on storyline wise for either man right now, this would be a good opportunity to put them to use.

There is not as much of a surprise factor with either man thanks to them already being on the main roster, though. The reveal wouldn't have as much impact as bringing in a new name or someone who hasn't been around for some time.

Samoa Joe is the kind of powerful, intimidating wrestler Reigns and Ambrose should be looking for.

WWE isn't likely to call on him. The company seems to want to keep The Samoan Submission Machine as a draw for hardcore fans on NXT. He's the bigger-name veteran who can aid the developmental brand both in terms of putting guys over and selling tickets. Don't expect that arrangement to stop, despite how fun it would be.

Samoa Joe addresses the NXT crowd.

This story would be a thrilling way to bring Daniel Bryan back. There has been no indication WWE has changed its mind on clearing him, however.

And while Erick Rowan would make for an intriguing option as a former Wyatt member now gone rogue, there's not enough sizzle to bringing a guy low on the card back. Besides, he is probably still working with a bad wing.

The Wrestling Observer Newsletter (h/t Wrestle Zone) reported back in June that Rowan's biceps injury would keep him out of action for at least four months.

While critics will point to Corbin's limitations, he is a realistic and suitable candidate to play Ambrose and Reigns' muscle.

Corbin's size, look and presence push him into this spot. He's not nearly as well-rounded as NXT's other top prospects, but this angle calls for a hammering bruiser who looks the part.

WWE has booked Strowman to be a Goliath flinging around the Davids of the world. He is WWE's latest monster, a leviathan born of the shadows. To combat that, Reigns and Ambrose need their own larger-than-life soldier.

Corbin can believably go up against Strowman. He towers over the majority of WWE's roster and has, for the most part, been booked like a storm tearing through a city.

And while he is still too inconsistent in the ring and not nearly a polished enough performer, this scenario allows WWE to mask that. Like Strowman, he can be worked into the flow of things over time. Corbin need not pull off Iron Man matches; he just needs to provide short bursts of destruction.

That is what he has excelled at thus far at NXT.

Given that role, he would essentially be what Reigns was for The Shield early on. Ambrose and Seth Rollins carried the in-ring load. Reigns provided the muscle, the action-hero look, the imposing presence.

With Reigns being a much more reliable in-ring performer than he once was, Corbin can now lean on him.

Corbin has been at his best in slugfests brimming with intensity. We saw that at play in one of his best outings to date at NXT TakeOver: Brooklyn when he challenged Joe.

This is the kind of fight that would await him were he to align with Reigns and Ambrose. The feud with The Wyatt Family isn't going to lead to any technical clinics. This is going to be a series of slobberknockers.

That's that best way to get Corbin rolling and let WWE see what it has in him.

It's also the best way to add some energy to this rivalry. The Lone Wolf's inclusion in the angle freshens it up. WWE fans get to see a new warrior go to battle. New matchup combinations arise that wouldn't if the company were to choose someone already on the roster for this role.

For Ambrose and Reigns, they get a convincing gladiator to stand by their side. Their storyline gets the buzz born from the unknown. And WWE gets to give Corbin a test run.

The big man can slide into the spotlight without the pressure of going it alone. He steps into the fray with talented workers in Wyatt and Harper. He has Ambrose and Reigns to make sure he's only carrying a minimal in-ring load.

Tommy Dreamer believes Corbin has bright things ahead for him. He told WWE.com, "Corbin is really, really good. He's super strong. He'll definitely be a force in WWE."

Being a part of the battle against The Wyatt Family offers the company a low-risk chance to see if that is indeed true.
