Rey Mysterio Talks AAA Triplemania, WWE Departure, Lucha Underground and More
Rey Mysterio is still one of the biggest stars in the wrestling industry, and the former WWE world champion is once again headlining a major pay-per-view this Sunday for AAA Wrestling in Mexico.
In what has been dubbed a dream match, the 40-year-old Mysterio will square off against Myzteziz—known to many WWE fans as the original Sin Cara—in the main event of Sunday’s Triplemania show available on PPV in English in both the United States and Canada.
Mysterio recently spoke with Ring Rust Radio (quotes courtesy of the News of Delaware County's Joe Arcidiacono) about main eventing AAA’s biggest PPV of the year on August 9, his departure and possible return to WWE, his interest in working for Lucha Underground and so much more.

For those who remember the short run Mysterio and Myzteziz had in the WWE as a tag team, the eventual breakup and feud against each other would have made for a great storyline. Instead, injuries kept both men off television and killed any momentum before it got rolling.
Now at Triplemania, wrestling fans finally get to see Mysterio and Myzteziz go to battle under the brightest lights in Mexico. The former WWE world champion spoke candidly about the magnitude of the main event match on Sunday:
"Well that match between us is going to a legacy defining match. There is a lot of animosity and egos that are going to come into play that night. I have to point out that this match was made for the fans by the fans. The fans were the number one critiques on who is better: Rey Mysterio or Myzteziz. At one point, I left Mexico to continue my career globally and a new star came about. He is known now as Myzteziz, but back then he was known as Mistico, and then Sin Cara when he joined WWE. I would have to say the fans in their eyes see a lot of similarities between us. We even tagged at one point in the WWE and now here we are against each other thanks to the fans.
"
What makes this matchup even more special is that both men are healthy and ready to settle their feud on a level playing field. Mysterio and Myzteziz had been dealing with injuries in WWE, but after spending so many years in the business, the grind was really taking its toll on the former world champion.
In February 2015, Mysterio left the WWE after a long and successful run with the company, but his departure was surrounded by rumors. He addressed these reports and talked about his relationship with his former employers:
"The initial meeting in Buffalo went well. Both parties, they agreed to continue to move forward on the Rey Mysterio brand. There was no rumors, no animosity, no bad feelings between us. I feel like re-signing with the company due to the fact that I had a large amount of injuries on my body. That was the number one reason why I was on the bench so long. So when it came around to re-signing, they were OK with me wanting to depart and do my own thing. There was no hard feelings and we departed in an amicable way. It was my time to think for myself and act upon myself and that was the best thing I had done for myself in years. I have had time to rest and my body feels a thousand times better. I’m calling my own shots and doing things I have never been able to do in my career. I never had the freedom to do them but now I do.
"
As it usually is on the Internet, the situation between WWE and Mysterio was blown out of proportion. After spending 13 years with one company, it was time for a change, and he is now finding major success with other companies all over the world.
From main eventing in WWE to now main eventing Triplemania against Myzteziz, Mysterio is proving that he is far from finished with the wrestling industry. One possibility for the future of his career is Lucha Underground, and he spoke about the wrestling promotion and his level of interest working with the company:
"I’m a big fan of their product and I watch it on occasion. They are doing a wonderful job and I think it’s great that they give an opportunity to the future talent of AAA. I sit down and think if we had that type of promotion going on when AAA was filled with Psychosis, Juventud, Parka, Pentagon, Konnan, then lucha libre would have been introduced years ago to the United States. Unfortunately it didn’t happen but I think everything has its time to be exposed and now it has happened for Lucha Underground. I think if the time is right and I am interested I don’t see why not. If the opportunity came to come back to the WWE with a 50/50 terms base, I would do that as well. It’s good to know you have options and when the options come I will be the first to jump on it as long as it favors both parties involved.
"
Lucha Underground is one of the hottest new promotions in the industry, and Mysterio would be an incredible addition to their roster for a second season. While the company has not announced a second season yet, the hope from fans is that we get another year of Lucha Underground featuring the former WWE champion.
Regardless of what the future holds for Mysterio, his impact on the business for the last two decades can’t be denied. From Mexico, to ECW, to WCW, to WWE, he has seen almost everything in the business and has come out wiser after so much experience.
Now, Mysterio will return to a PPV main event and will once again be one of the top wrestlers in the world when he steps into the ring against Myzteziz on Sunday, August 9 at 7 p.m. ET in the main event of the Triplemania PPV.
A healthy and refocused Mysterio will be hard to stop. Wherever he hangs his hat, the former WWE world champion will be a major draw and a legend in the wrestling business.
