Shane Mosley to Come Out of Retirement, Fight Ricardo Mayorga

Mike ChiariJul 9, 2015

It has been nearly two years since "Sugar" Shane Mosley last fought, but the former three-division world champion is set to come out of retirement to take on Ricardo Mayorga in August.

The 43-year-old Mosley announced (Language in link NSFW) the upcoming clash on Twitter, although he didn't offer specifics with regard to where it would be held, nor did he provide the exact date.

Mosley's last fight came against Australia's Anthony Mundine in November 2013, but he lost the bout as back spasms prevented him from continuing. In fact, Mosley hasn't enjoyed much success in recent years as he is 1-4-1 over his last six contests, including losses to elite stars such as Floyd Mayweather Jr., Manny Pacquiao and Canelo Alvarez.

Despite his struggles, he has decided to resume his career. He explained how the fight with Mayorga came to be on Twitter (Language in tweet NSFW):

Mosley also provided a photo of himself and Mayorga signing the necessary documentation to make their rematch official:

The two fighters originally met in 2009 in a bout that Mosley won by 12th-round knockout. It was a difficult fight to score that could have gone either way prior to the knockout, but Mosley managed to take the guesswork out of the equation.

While he knows how to beat Mayorga, it can be argued that the latter has the advantage since the 41-year-old Nicaraguan fought more recently. He defeated Andrik Saralegui in December 2014, and he is actually riding a two-fight winning streak.

As a whole, though, Mosley has enjoyed more success than Mayorga over the years with a 47-9-1 record to Mayorga's 31-8-1.

Although there may be some trepidation among boxing fans when it comes to watching this fight since both fighters are over the age of 40, Mosley provided an interesting reason to tune in aside from his meeting with Mayorga.

His 24-year-old son and trainee, Shane Mosley Jr., will be part of the undercard when the event takes place in August:

Despite the fact that Mosley and Mayorga are both very much near the end of their respective careers, their decision to lock horns one more time will undoubtedly generate interest due to the name recognition they have been able to build up.

Perhaps they won't be as fast or as exciting as they were in the past, but neither man has much to lose at this stage, so it is fair to expect a hard-hitting affair that could truly go either way.
