Mo Williams to Cavaliers: Latest Contract Details, Comments and Reaction

Joseph ZuckerJul 6, 2015

A familiar face will suit up in the Cleveland Cavaliers backcourt next season. According to Yahoo Sports' Adrian Wojnarowski, the Eastern Conference champions agreed to a deal on Monday with Mo Williams. Williams will receive $4.3 million over two years along with a player option, per Wojnarowski.

Wojnarowski added that the veteran combo guard had interest from a few different teams before opting for the Cavs:

Williams sent out this tweet to confirm the news:

ESPN's Brian Windhorst reported that Cleveland "used part of taxpayer mid-level to sign Mo Williams. They will have $1.3 million of it leftover."

Williams spent two-and-a-half seasons in Cleveland between 2008 and 2011. In 186 regular-season games for the Cavs, he averaged 16.2 points a game and 5.1 assists. He earned a trip to the All-Star Game in 2009.

Of course, quite a bit has changed since then, both with the Cavs and Williams.

Williams scored 14.2 points a night during his time with the Minnesota Timberwolves and Charlotte Hornets in 2014-15. The 32-year-old also became one of the more obscure 50-point-club members after dropping 52 on the Indiana Pacers in a 110-101 victory for the T'Wolves in January.

Whereas Williams was essentially the second offensive option to LeBron James in Cleveland a few years ago, he'll likely come off the bench for the Cavs this time around. Bleacher Report's Ethan Skolnick believes his versatility will be a boon to the Cavaliers rotation:

With Williams in the fold, it could impact what they do with Matthew Dellavedova, who is a restricted free agent. According to ESPN.com's Marc Stein, Cleveland still plans on re-signing him.

Seth Partnow of Nylon Calculus remains a bit skeptical of the signing:

If you look past the sentimental aspect of this deal, it's fair to question whether the Cavs would be better off with Williams. He shot just 39.7 percent from the field last year, and defense has never been a hallmark of his game.

With that said, J.R. Smith proved to be a very valuable member of the team almost exclusively because of his spot-up shooting. If Williams plays a similar role in 2015-16, he will likely erase any doubts about his utility to the team.
