Have The BYU Cougars Learned Their Lesson From Last Year?

The BYU Cougars have upset Oklahoma in week one...and won the national championship? That doesn't sound quite right does it? Well that is the attitude and the reaction I have gotten from listening to talk radio and just conversations with BYU students.

Now I must say this. Will the REAL BYU fans please stand up?!

There are a few things wrong with BYU but the absolute worst thing is that there are a LOT of bandwagon and fair-weather fans. In Utah County football is not at the top of the list for a lot of people, only when BYU is winning is it the cool thing to do.

As a true Cougar fan, this embarrasses me. Not only are these people fair-weather, but as soon as BYU starts winning, they start talking and the problem gets 10 times worse.

I've heard so many people saying that BYU is going to win a national championship and it is already played out.

Now the TRUE BLUE fans have to stand up and tell these people to SHUT UP!!

The fact is that the win over Oklahoma was huge beyond words and not just to BYU but for all non-BCS teams. The Cougars are now ranked in the top 10, at No. 9 in the country. and yes they are in position to strike.

But this is all after one week of college football! One single game out of 12! The Cougars still have a very difficult schedule with Florida St., Colorado St.(who beat Colorado last week),Air Force, TCU, and Utah. So pump the brakes and slow down!

Listen to me Cougar fans PLEASE!! The media is going to make a huge deal about BYU and talk about it all the time because it's a story. But last year what happened to our Cougars? They spent to much time paying attention to the media and the rankings than they should have spent watching film and preparing for their next opponent.

Because of that they had meltdowns against TCU, Utah, and Arizona. Cougar fans should make note of this and encourage that the Cougars should be focusing on Tulane and not January. The absolute worst thing that could happen is getting caught up in all the media hype instead of taking care of what they can control and that is beating Tulane, let the rest take care of itself.

As far as the team goes however it seems that they have learned their lesson. They played with a chip on their shoulder against Oklahoma and they should continue to do so. Bronco Mendenhall hasn't even addressed the national championship questions from the media, which is a good thing.

I think they will be focused for this week and what a better game to get the Cougar offense rolling on all cylinders? But don't forget that Tulane had LSU on the ropes for 3 quarters last year.

Cougar fans all you need to do is support BYU unconditionally and fully not because it's the cool thing to do. You don't need to go out on ESPN chat rooms and scream "We are going the win the National title!" That is just asking for trouble and it gives you a horrible reputation.

If people bash BYU just take the high road they are just bashing because they are scared all you have to do is defend the Cougars not fight their battles on-line. Let them do that on the field that will take care of everything else.
