Aaron Hernandez's Legal Team Files Court Documents Regarding 'Untruthful' Juror

Timothy RappJun 15, 2015

Aaron Hernandez's legal team has challenged his murder conviction in the Odin Lloyd case, claiming that one of the jurors was "untruthful" about his knowledge of a separate incident, Hernandez's double-murder case in Boston.

The Associated Press has more (via ESPN.com):

"

In redacted court documents released Monday, lawyer James Sultan says he spoke four times with an anonymous caller, starting the day after Hernandez was convicted April 15 of first-degree murder for the 2013 killing of Odin Lloyd in North Attleborough, Massachusetts.

The names of the juror and the caller are redacted throughout the documents, as are details of what the caller said and what was said during the jury selection process before the trial. ...

During those conversations, one lasting as long as 25 minutes, Sultan said she told him that she recognized the juror from TV and that the juror had been present for a discussion about a Boston double murder case that Hernandez is also charged in. Mention of those killings was barred at trial. Hernandez has pleaded not guilty.

As noted in the report, Sultan claims that the juror failed to disclose any knowledge of that case. Hernandez's lawyer has requested that the judge issue a subpoena to trace the calls. And according to TMZ Sports, Sultan also claimed that the woman had information that suggested the juror in question wanted to be on the jury for the Hernandez trial.

Finally, the Associated Press reported that the names of the caller and juror were redacted in the court documents and that the woman refused to give her last name and called from a blocked line. Hernandez's legal team has reiterated that if it had known the potential juror was aware of the other case or had any interest in the Lloyd trial, it would have asked that the juror be excused.

Hernandez was sentenced to life in prison without parole after being convicted of Lloyd's murder.
