Tim Wright to Buccaneers: Latest Details, Comments and Reaction

Adam WellsJun 12, 2015

After a one-year retreat to New England, tight end Tim Wright is on his way back to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers

According to Scott Smith of the Buccaneers' official website, the team claimed Wright after the Patriots put him on waivers:

"

Last August, Tim Wright and Logan Mankins crossed paths in an unexpected trade just before the start of the NFL season. Now the two are teammates.

On Friday, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers claimed Wright off waivers from the New England Patriots, who had cut the third-year tight end the day before. To make room on their 90-man offseason roster, the Buccaneers waived first-year tight end Taylor Sloat.

Per Alex Marvez of Fox Sports, Wright was one of the most productive rookie tight ends in Tampa Bay's system:

Buccaneers quarterback Mike Glennon, who threw a lot of those passes to Wright in 2013, is happy to see the tight end back:

Wright has had a whirlwind start to his career. The 25-year-old is entering his third season after signing with the Buccaneers in 2013 as an undrafted free agent before being traded to New England last year. He has played 32 games in the past two years, with 10 starts, 80 receptions and 11 touchdowns.

The Buccaneers team he is coming back to looks very different from the one he left. Glennon is on the roster, but Jameis Winston was drafted first overall and won't be waiting long for a chance to play. Lovie Smith did work with Wright last offseason and preseason before he was dealt to the Patriots in August.

Given where the Buccaneers are, with a rookie potentially starting at quarterback, adding as many weapons on offense as possible makes sense. Wright has a familiarity with the franchise and some of the players on offense, so he can be a bigger factor with them than he was as a member of the Patriots in 2014.
