Pretty much everyone loves Leo Messi, so a political endorsement from the Barcelona star would be a big deal.
The Partido Patriota (PP) of Guatemala decided to align itself with Messi to try to win some votes.
The party's colour is orange, so it used a picture of Messi in Barca's orange third kit on a banner that says, "The best team is orange. On the 6th of September vote for the [Partido] Patriota of Jacaltenango, the best team," per Sport.
There was just one small problem: It didn't get permission from the Argentinian star.
Understandably, Messi's camp was not happy when it learned of the banner.
His management company released a statement distancing itself from political goings-on in the Central American country.
Again, per Sport:
"The player and his company Leo Messi Management explained in a press release to EFE in Guatemala that "nobody has authorised the use of the image of the player, for this political party or any other."
They also stated that "they hold the right to take the legal action open to them" against any person or institution that use the image of the Barcelona player.
"
The party said the banner was not part of its official campaign but something done locally in the rural town of Jacaltenango. It added that it could punish those responsible.
