Stock Up, Stock Down for Mets' Top 10 Prospects for Week 9

Shale BriskinJun 6, 2015

The Mets have struggled over the past week against the Miami Marlins and San Diego Padres. They are currently in the middle of a four-game series in Arizona against the Diamondbacks.

Down on the farm, some of the Mets' top prospects are now on the major league roster, including Kevin Plawecki, Dilson Herrera and Noah Syndergaard. The rest of the Mets' top prospects, though, are still playing in the minor leagues and hoping to become a part of the major league roster one day themselves.

Here are stock updates for the Mets' top 10 prospects.

10. Gabriel Ynoa, RHP, Binghamton Mets (Double-A)

1 of 10

2015 Statistics

9 GS, 2-3, 4.70 ERA, 17 BB, 27 K, 53.2 IP

Last Week's Statistics

1 GS, 0-0, 3 ER, 9 H, 1 K, 6.0 IP

Overview

One of the many great young arms in the Mets' organization is Gabriel Ynoa, who is on the Double-A Binghamton squad.

In his most recent start, Ynoa allowed three earned runs and nine hits in what turned out to be a no-decision for him. He lowered his ERA two points down to 4.70 and had one strikeout in six innings. He will look to put together a better month this time in June.

9. Matt Reynolds, SS, Las Vegas 51s (Triple-A)

2015 Statistics

54 G, .276/.332/.407, 3 HR, 35 RBI, 36 R, 8 SB

Last Week's Statistics

8 G, 8/30, 1 HR, 8 RBI, 3 R, 1 SB

Overview

Over the past week, Matt Reynolds has been raking at the plate, with eight hits in his last 30 at-bats, plus a home run and eight RBI. He's having a very good season and could be on the verge of a major league promotion later in the year. Should Wilmer Flores or Ruben Tejada get hurt, Reynolds would almost certainly get promoted as a replacement.

Overview

Jhoan Urena still has not had an at-bat since May 20. Adam Rubin of ESPN.com reported that Urena exited midway through the St. Lucie Mets' game on May 22, but according to the box score that night, Urena actually left after the first inning. No particular injury has been reported thus far, but hopefully Urena will be OK.

Gavin Cecchini racked up a lot of hits this past week, raising his average all the way up to .341 to go along with a .392 OBP and a .500 slugging percentage. He certainly looks on track to have a breakout season this year. If he keeps hitting like this, a promotion to Triple-A could even be possible.

6. Dominic Smith, 1B, St. Lucie Mets (Single-A)

5 of 10

2015 Statistics

43 G, .269/.311/.401, 1 HR, 28 RBI, 27 R

Last Week's Statistics

Overview

Dominic Smith has finally begun to really produce at the plate. He hit his first home run of the season this past week and drove in nine runs. He has raised his average up to .269, and his OBP is now above .300.

Hopefully, the 2013 first-round pick will continue to put together a better season this year.

5. Marcos Molina, RHP, St. Lucie Mets (Single-A)

Overview

Marcos Molina has not made a start since May 13 and was placed on the disabled list on May 14 with a strained right elbow. Hopefully, this is not too serious of an injury and Molina gets better soon.

4. Amed Rosario, SS, St. Lucie Mets (Single-A)

7 of 10

2015 Statistics

54 G, .276/.318/.381, 0 HR, 13 RBI, 25 R, 7 SB

Last Week's Statistics

8 G, 9/33, 5 RBI, 4 R, 3 SB

Overview

Amed Rosario's offense has been better lately, and he's had five RBI in the past week. He raised his average a few points to .276 and stole three bases as well.

Rosario is just 19 years old, so he's still a long way from the major leagues, but if he has a big season this year, it would certainly help him move up the system quicker.

3. Michael Conforto, LF, St. Lucie Mets (Single-A)

8 of 10

2015 Statistics

52 G, .293/.369/.478, 7 HR, 35 RBI, 27 R

Last Week's Statistics

6 G, 8/21, 7 RBI, 2 R

Overview

After hitting .283 with seven home runs and 28 RBI in 46 games with Single-A St. Lucie, Michael Conforto was promoted to Double-A Binghamton on May 29. It was well-deserved for the 2014 first-round pick, who is already making his mark with his new team. In his first 21 Double-A at-bats, Conforto has eight hits and has driven in seven runs.

Look for Conforto to continue to rise rapidly through the Mets' farm system.

2. Brandon Nimmo, CF, Binghamton Mets (Double-A)

9 of 10

2015 Statistics

34 G, .297/.368/.420, 2 HR, 9 RBI, 13 R

Overview

Brandon Nimmo hasn't played since May 15 because of a sprained knee, as reported by Adam Rubin of ESPN.com. The team placed Nimmo on the disabled list on May 17. Hopefully, he will continue to hit well when he gets healthy again.

1. Steven Matz, LHP, Las Vegas 51s (Triple-A)

10 of 10

2015 Statistics

11 GS, 6-4, 1.94 ERA, 27 BB, 75 K, 74.1 IP

Last Week's Statistics

2 GS, 0-2, 2 ER, 10 H, 6 BB, 7 K, 11.0 IP

Overview

Steven Matz's last two starts have included two hard-luck losses. He gave up one run in each of the starts, but his team got shut out in both games. In the first of those two starts, he allowed one earned run, three hits and two walks in five innings pitched while striking out two.

In the second start, Matz allowed one earned run, seven hits and four walks in six innings pitched while striking out five. A lack of run support cost him another chance for a win. He lowered his ERA to 1.94 for the season.

Matz, at this point, looks more than ready to be a part of the Mets' major league pitching staff. It should be only a matter of time before it ends up happening, but the Mets' crowded rotation could delay the call-up.
