Is Georgia's Push for Transfer Quarterbacks a Sign of Impending Doom?
Former Notre Dame and current Florida State quarterback Everett Golson has settled on a transfer school, but that doesn't mean the graduate transfer carousel has stopped spinning.
According to Marc Weiszer of the Athens Banner-Herald, Georgia—which hosted Golson for a visit in May—has been granted permission by Virginia to speak with graduate transfer quarterback Greyson Lambert.
On Tuesday, Seth Emerson of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution confirmed with head coach Mark Richt that the program is recruiting Lambert.
Lambert, a native of Jesup, Georgia, who was a 4-star prospect in the class of 2014, threw 10 touchdowns and 11 interceptions last year for the Cavaliers. At 6'5", 220 pounds, he is the prototypical dropback passer who can stand tall in the pocket and stretch the field.
He will have two years of eligibility remaining upon completing his degree this summer.

So what's the deal in Athens?
Is the search for a graduate transfer quarterback proof that the position is in dire straits?
Nope, it's all about insurance for Richt and new offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer.
After completing five of his nine passes for 174 yards and one touchdown in the spring game, sophomore Brice Ramsey exited spring practice with a leg up on the three-man competition that includes junior Faton Bauta and redshirt freshman Jacob Park.
"During the spring, I think he's done a very good job of studying what to do, getting us in the right protection and getting us in the right hot and sight-adjustment situations," Richt said in the postgame press conference.

Bauta, who's more of a bruising dual-threat cut out of the Tim Tebow mold, was efficient, completing 16 of 25 passes for 171 yards, while Park finished 10-of-15 for 92 yards and a pick.
All three quarterbacks looked like competent game managers, and Ramsey showed off the arm strength that could make him a difference-maker with a little more work in the offseason.

If Georgia accepts a graduate transfer this summer—or if they had won the Golson sweepstakes—Ramsey is still going to have a say in the battle. Georgia isn't shopping for a starting quarterback, it's shopping for depth.
"I think we have guys who are capable of getting the job done," Richt said last month during the coaches teleconference. "We have three on scholarship. I'd always feel better with four or five on scholarship, quite frankly. We are just in a year where we have three."

Lambert, like Golson, would not be a savior for Georgia, nor would he be the player who makes or breaks Georgia's SEC East title hopes. He's a solid player who has more experience than any other quarterback on the Georgia roster and can provide much-needed depth for a program that could use some.
That's it.
The fact that Georgia is shopping for quarterbacks isn't an indictment of Ramsey, an indication that the Bulldogs are scrambling or a sign of impending doom for the program.
It's all about insurance for Richt.
Taking a look at experienced quarterbacks with regional ties is a smart move for the program, considering the relative inexperience that exists on the depth chart.
