Manny Pacquiao Talks Potential Rematch and Injury After Loss to Floyd Mayweather
Manny Pacquiao was thoroughly outclassed by Floyd Mayweather on Saturday night. Anyone could see that. But as we get further removed from the bout, an increasingly vocal Pacquiao camp seems determined to highlight Pac-Man's injured shoulder as the reason he lost.
Speaking with Ryan Songalia of Rappler, Pacquiao derided the Nevada Athletic Commission's decision to prevent him from receiving an anti-inflammatory shot in his shoulder prior to the fight.
"I really needed that shot because if I throw a power hook or power jab, it hurt," Pacquiao said.

Pacquiao suffered a shoulder injury in training and believed he'd be able to take the shot prior to the fight to control his pain. Instead, according to Songalia, NAC chairman Francisco Aguilar declined Pacquiao's request, saying it would not be approved, because no injuries were listed on the pre-fight report. For his part, Pacquiao said his camp did fill out the proper paperwork.
"We filled it out, but also I'm so disappointed because for the first time in my boxing career, more than 20 years, they hold my vitamins, they hold my water [from] the dressing room. This is new," he said.
Mayweather would go on to earn a unanimous-decision victory, taking over during the fight's second half and dictating the pace. The pound-for-pound king landed 67 more punches, per CompuBox, and actually threw more (six more) against a surprisingly cautious Pacquiao. Saying he was only at "60 percent" following a fourth-round flare-up of his shoulder, Pacquiao said he'd like to have a rematch.
"I want a rematch if he wants. I wasn't 100 percent ready for last night, because of this shoulder, but I don't want to use that complaining that I lost the fight. I'm just accepting the fact that I lost," he explained.
While there will inevitably be debate about a potential rematch, Sports Illustrated's Chris Mannix broke down why he thinks not many people will want to see one:
Mayweather has one more fight mandated in his Showtime contract, which will presumably take place in September. Given the financial windfall both fighters received, it would be a shock to see Mayweather pass up the opportunity to go at Pacquiao one more time.
Only then will we see just how much Pacquiao's shoulder injury affected the result.
