Floyd Mayweather Camp Talks Up 'Easy' Amir Khan for Final Career Fight

Rory MarsdenMay 3, 2015

Floyd Mayweather is eyeing up a potential "easy" final fight with Amir Khan before he hangs up his gloves following a glittering career.

The 38-year-old American beat Manny Pacquiao on Saturday in Las Vegas by unanimous decision to move his unbeaten record to 48-0.

Following the fight, Mayweather insisted he would step into the ring just one more time in September, to fulfil his bumper six-fight deal with Showtime, before retiring, per Sky Sports.

Mayweather's father and coach, Floyd Sr, believes Khan would be a good opponent for his son in his final fight, as it would be an easy win which would see him retire undefeated, per Dave Kidd in the Mirror:

"

I’ll tell you what I think my son should do in September – given he’s fought all the hard-hitters – my son needs to get his contract and end it with an easy fight, he don’t need no tough fights. Amir Khan? Yes, that’d be a good fight for him. My son would beat him, I know. Of course it would be easier than Pacquiao. Khan has a pretty decent jab but all the technical things, he can’t do [them].

"

According to Gareth A. Davies of The Telegraph, Khan said he was approached by Mayweather's manager, Leonard Ellerbe, about the potential clash:

"

“I’m in a position where I could face either but I want Mayweather,” said Khan, who claimed that Leonard Ellerbe, Mayweather’s manager, had approached him after the fight against Manny Pacquiao at the MGM Grand Garden Arena on Saturday asking him to “get it on."

"

Mayweather became the unified WBC, WBA, and WBO welterweight champion on Saturday night by defeating Pac-Man, but he has said that he will relinquish all of his titles in the coming weeks, per BBC Sport's Dan Roan:

Thus his mooted final fight will not be a championship bout, but merely a chance for Mayweather to bow out of the sport with a 49th victory.

A potential fight between former world champion Khan and Mayweather has been on the cards for some time, per Jimmy Lloyd in The Sun

English boxing promoter Frank Warren believes that 28-year-old Khan's speed could prove difficult for Money, per BBC Radio 5 live:

However, following Saturday's clinical performance from Mayweather, it seems unlikely there is anyone in the world of boxing that could trouble him at the moment.

There may be difficulty in getting a Mayweather-Khan fight made in September, as it would require the Brit, a Muslim, to train while fasting for Ramadan.

Khan faces Chris Algieri on May 29 in New York, but he is clearly eager to set up a bout with Mayweather in the near future, per Kidd:

"

I think Mayweather’s team want the fight. I really believe I have Mayweather’s number. I am ready for whatever he wants. I can’t do September because of Ramadan but if we can do this year or early next year, I will definitely jump to it.

"

Should Khan not end up being Mayweather's next opponent, it may not be the final opportunity for the 2004 Olympic silver medalist.

If and when Mayweather fights and wins in September, he will equal the great Rocky Marciano for number of fights gone undefeated, per ESPN Stats & Info:

Mayweather may well be tempted to fight one more time in order to claim the outright record if he does indeed move to 49-0.

Money proved on Saturday—as if it were needed—that he is a supremely talented boxer, the best of the current era, and having seen Pacquiao struggle against him, Khan would surely have similar problems.

But one more fight at least for Mayweather is certainly in prospect, and Khan is clearly being eyed by Pretty Boy as a potential target.
