Dallas Cowboys Mock Draft: Updated Day 2 Predictions
The Dallas Cowboys started the first day of the draft with a bang as they got one of the most talented secondary players in this draft class with Connecticut's Byron Jones.
Now, the Cowboys must look ahead to the second day of the draft, where the second and third rounds will take place. There are a ton of fantastic football players still on the board, so the Cowboys could go a number of different ways.
The Cowboys still need a running back to replace DeMarco Murray and could even use some depth at linebacker and interior defensive line. This draft is very deep in the second and third rounds, so Dallas should be able to get a couple of players who can make an immediate positive impact.
One thing for sure is that it will be a lot of fun. With that being said, let's look at whom the Cowboys may take in the second round and beyond.
2nd Round
1 of 5The Pick: Duke Johnson, RB, Miami
With Todd Gurley and Melvin Gordon as the only running backs off the board, there is a good chance that Miami's Duke Johnson can find himself with Dallas before Friday is over.
At 5'9" and 207 pounds, Johnson may be small in stature, but he plays big and would be an excellent fit with the Cowboys.
Johnson is a very patient runner who runs the outside zone, a staple in Dallas' offense, better than anyone else in this draft class. Johnson can vary his stride, make a cut and explode through creases unlike most of the running backs in this class.
Furthermore, Johnson would be a great option on third down, as he is a fantastic option out of the backfield. Johnson could be a blitz-beater and make opponents pay for trying to get after Tony Romo.
Johnson would be an outstanding pick for Dallas and allow the Cowboys to continue with their great draft.
3rd Round
2 of 5
The Pick: Trey Flowers, DE, Arkansas
With the Cowboys already selecting Byron Jones, there is no reason to double-dip here. Therefore, you can expect that the Cowboys will target a defensive end, and Try Flowers is the best player who could be available at this spot.
Flowers is one of the best run defenders in this draft, as he used his length and power to stack and shed SEC offensive tackles with ease. Flowers plays with great leverage, and he understands how to use and position his hands to put himself in a good position to win the battle at the line of scrimmage.
As a pass-rusher, Flowers isn't very quick, but he does have some explosiveness to his game, which allows him to convert speed to power very well.
Flowers would step in as a right defensive end for the Cowboys and give them an extremely productive run defender until he develops more as a pass-rusher.
4th Round
3 of 5
The Pick: Rakeem Nunez-Roches, DT, Southern Mississippi
The Cowboys could go a number of different ways with their fourth-round pick, but Rakeem Nunez-Roches represents fantastic value and is just too hard to pass up.
Nunez-Roches can play at either the nose or under tackle position for the Cowboys, and he can be a key cog in defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli's defensive line rotation.
Nunez-Roches is a fireplug in the interior defensive line, and he plays with a great deal of passion and hustle. He never stops working his hands and feet to get in a position to make a play. He needs to get stronger at the point of attack and get better at getting off blocks, but Nunez-Roches will give a lot of offensive linemen fits by how hard he plays snap after snap.
Nunez-Roches is exactly the type of defensive lineman Marinelli loves, and he would greatly improve the depth of the Cowboys defensive line.
5th Round
4 of 5
The Pick: Ty Montgomery, WR, Stanford
The fifth round is the perfect time to find players who will make a special teams impact as they develop to the point where they can be valuable commodities on offense or defense. This perfectly describes Stanford's Ty Montgomery, who will make his presence felt for the Cowboys extremely early.
Montgomery is an electric kick and punt returner who has the potential to score every time he receives the ball. He has fantastic vision to see creases and the speed to hit the creases, as he regularly puts his team in good field position.
As a receiver, Montgomery has a ways to go as he needs to become a more polished route-runner and work on his questionable hands. However, when Montgomery gets the ball in his hands, there are not many players who are better than Montgomery in this class.
Montgomery would step in as the kick and punt returner for Dallas and possibly make an impact on offense in the screen, jet sweep and reverse game.
7th Round
5 of 5
The Pick: Chaz Green, OT, Florida
The Pick: Amarlo Herrera, LB, Georgia
The seventh round is an area where teams try to find capable backups with a couple of defining traits that make them worth developing. The Cowboys get two of those types of players here with Chaz Green and Amarlo Herrera.
Green is a dancing bear with fantastic feet and positional versatility that the Cowboys will love. He has the foot quickness to survive on the edge, and he understands how to slide and wall off defenders in the run game. He isn't going to create a ton of push in the running game, as he needs to improve his strength and power at the point of attack, but he isn't going to get blown up either.
Green could step in and be the swing tackle for Dallas and give the team someone it can develop to take over for Doug Free when he inevitably retires.
Herrera is an extremely instinctive and productive linebacker who can play all three linebacker positions for the Cowboys. He isn't a good athlete, but he makes up for it with the ability to key and diagnose plays incredibly quickly.
Herrera could be a jack-of-all-trades linebacker for Dallas, much like Anthony Hitchens, and give it some impact and productivity on special teams.
