Atlanta Falcons Mock Draft: Updated Day 3 Predictions

Scott CarasikMay 1, 2015

The Atlanta Falcons have had one of their better drafts in a long time with the selections of Vic Beasley, Jalen Collins and Tevin Coleman on the first two days of the draft. On Day 3, the Falcons will have to draft guys who add depth to a team that needs to continue building it.

Atlanta's biggest starting need remaining is at left guard, but other than that, it has almost all of the starting roles in the offense and defense taken. Depth and future talent throughout the roster needs to be enhanced through the third day of the draft.

Recapping the Falcons' Picks Thus Far

1 of 6

With the first-round pick, the Falcons took their biggest need at defensive end with the selection of Vic Beasley. He's going to be relied upon to be the primary pass-rusher for the Falcons and has looked like the ideal pick for Dan Quinn's "Leo" defensive end role.

In the second round, Quinn wanted to shore up the secondary with the pick of Jalen Collins. Collins was selected because of his length and scheme fit for the Falcons. With all of the big, physical receivers in the NFC South, he'll be worth the pick for a long time.

The third-round pick—running back Tevin Coleman—is going to be in competition for the starting running back job with Devonta Freeman and should be able to fit the Falcons scheme nearly perfectly. Atlanta should be able to have a competent run game for the first time in a long time with his pick.

Round 4, No. 107 Overall: OL T.J. Clemmings, Pittsburgh

2 of 6

The Falcons need a starting left guard for their zone-blocking scheme, and T.J. Clemmings is the perfect fit. He should have been selected much earlier,. but questions related to his foot have caused him to slip.

Clemmings has a monster punch at the line and can knock back defensive linemen easily. He fires off the ball effectively in the run game and can open wide holes. In pass blocking, he has some issues mirroring defensive ends. But if he played guard, he'd be able to adjust to the pass rush easier and fit the offense better.

Putting Clemmings between Jake Matthews and Joe Hawley would be an ideal fit to help him learn how to properly play in the NFL. He'd be able to adjust to the pass protection calls without having to move outside of the phone booth on passing downs.

Round 5, No. 146 Overall: DT Grady Jarrett, Clemson

3 of 6

When it comes to depth that's needed in Atlanta, a pass-rushing defensive tackle who can attack from the 1-technique or 3-technique depending on what's needed at the time, Grady Jarrett would be a perfect rotational depth piece at defensive tackle that should have gone off the board on the second day.

Jarrett has the ability to fire off the ball so hard that he's penetrating the backfield of an offense quickly versus the running game. He's more quick than fast and has the power to bust through double-teams when he inevitably draws them on the running downs.

When it comes to rushing the passer, there are few tackles better than he is. His production can't be measured by the number of sacks because he can create pressure without actually sacking the quarterback. In Atlanta, he'd rotate at tackle with Paul Soliai and Ra'Shede Hageman on passing downs.

Round 6, No. 185 Overall: WR Antwan Goodley, Baylor

4 of 6

If Antwan Goodley continues to fall, the Falcons should swoop in and take him. He's very similar to Steve Smith Sr. from the Baltimore Ravens and Carolina Panthers as a deep-ball receiver. Goodley is a bigger-bodied receiver who might be a bit shorter than the average receiver.

He's got great deep speed, but his agility isn't what's needed to hit the defense in the right seams. Goodley also needs to improve on his routes, but he should provide a talented depth option to compete with Leonard Hankerson for one of the final roster spots.

Round 7, No. 225 Overall: TE Darren Waller

5 of 6

The Falcons don't have a great tight end on the roster. Darren Waller has the ability to burn a defense deep and develop into a true in-line tight end. Waller is a solid blocker as a receiver and would be a great fit as a move tight end early in his career.

The Falcons would be getting a talented receiver who needs to get better at running routes and catching with his hands. But his long-term potential makes him worth developing more than Levine Toilolo, Tony Moeaki and Jacob Tamme.

Round 7, No. 249 Overall: RB/FB Synjyn Days, Georgia Tech

6 of 6

The Falcons' late seventh-round pick needs to be the best player on their board. Honestly, there's no telling who that might be, so going with a great fit for a power running back option like Synjyn Days just makes a ton of sense, as he's very similar to Alfred Morris.

Days could wind up being a starting fullback in the NFL, too. Early in his career, though, he'd be a perfect core-four special teams player for the Falcons who could develop into a potential starter. Days is a former quarterback who has excellent vision and should be able to attack defenses easily.
