Arsenal Transfer News: 'New Thierry Henry' Donyell Malen and Ilkay Gundogan Eyed

Rob BlanchetteApr 22, 2015

Arsenal are lining up a potential move for exciting Dutch striker Donyell Malen, who has been compared to Gunners legend Thierry Henry.

Jamie Anderson of the Daily Star reports the 16-year-old Ajax talent is on Arsene Wenger's radar, with the player under the tutelage of super agent, Mino Raiola.

Anderson quotes Raiola calling Malen a "phenomenon" and the "jewel of the future for Ajax," but he has also hinted the Amsterdam club have yet to offer the player fresh terms.

Speaking to Italian newspaper La Stampa, per Anderson, the influential agent said: "[Malen] Has been sixteen for a while, but Ajax have still not contacted me for an interview. Weird right?"

The hesitation from Ajax could lead to suitors grabbing the potential superstar, with Wenger considering an approach.

The youngster made his under-16 debut for the Netherlands at the start of the season, featuring five times and scoring twice, per Transfermarkt.co.uk, and he has quickly progressed into the under-17 squad.

The comparisons to Henry may ultimately be premature but if a young player of his ability becomes available, a dogfight among Europe's elite will commence.

In other news, Arsenal will battle Premier League champions Manchester City for Borussia Dortmund's Ilkay Gundogan, as the Bundesliga team become vulnerable to approaches after Jurgen Klopp's exit.

BVB look forced to redesign their team and philosophy as they prepare to replace their coach, with Gundogan possibly Premier League-bound, as described by the Guardian's Ed Aarons, who rates the midfielder highly:

Gundogan's injury problems have been well documented, with the German international taking a full season to break back into full action for Dortmund.

The 24-year-old has managed 18 Bundesliga starts during the current campaign, per WhoScored.com, as he searches to find the electric form that made him one of Europe's most wanted.

Gundogan has walked back into a BVB team which has suffered from a crisis of confidence, and he may feel it is time to find a challenge elsewhere.

The German contingent at the Emirates can only help Wenger's cause if he decides he wants to add the player to his central stock.

Gundogan has featured mainly as a defensive midfielder for Klopp this season, and traditionally this has been a position up for debate at Arsenal. But Francis Coquelin's progression has accelerated in recent times, and Wenger may not have the desire to approach the German as a result.

Gundogan is a player with diverse ability and he is comfortable in the attacking areas of the pitch, suiting the Gunners' normal tactics from midfield.

But with a strong set of players already in this part of the park, surely Wenger's budget would be better spent on his defence.
