Multiple Teams Reportedly Reaching Out to Bucs
Thursday, April 30
With just a few hours remaining until the Bucs make their pick, teams are still contacting both Tampa Bay and the Tennessee Titans regarding the top two picks, reported Bleacher Report's Mike Freeman.
One of those teams is the Philadelphia Eagles, according to ESPN's Ed Werder, who believes they would select Mariota with the pick. However, Werder also reported that his sources are convinced Tampa Bay won't trade the pick.
On April 26, Yahoo Sports' Rand Getlin reported that, according to a source, "Multiple teams have reached out to the Bucs recently, inquiring into what it would take to get the [No. 1] pick." Getlin added, "Though the Bucs have clearly been listening, no proposal has been strong enough for the team to seriously consider."
On April 20, Buccaneers general manager Jason Licht told Roy Cummings of the Tampa Tribune that he would be "very comfortable" making the first overall pick if he had to. However, as ESPN's Ed Werder notes, Licht and Tampa Bay haven't announced the pick yet because they're aware of how many offers will come in late.
Bob Glauber of Newsday reported a day earlier that the Bucs were open to the possibility of dealing the top overall selection:
"According to two people familiar with the team's situation, the Bucs will listen seriously to trade offers for the No. 1 pick. That doesn't mean they will make a deal, and it doesn't mean that Winston won't wind up being the team's franchise quarterback. But the sources said the Bucs have let it be known in recent weeks that they are at least willing to listen to trade offers.
"
Glauber added:
"When asked if they have floated the idea of a potential trade in recent weeks, the Bucs declined to comment through a team spokesman. But one NFL source familiar with the team's thinking said they will consider a trade. "You don't shut the door on it until you have to," the source said of the Bucs' thinking, adding that the team appears willing to "listen to offers."
"
Of course, this isn't anything new for the team with the No. 1 selection. Any franchise would love to be blown away with an offer for the pick that nets multiple first- and second-round selections for years to come. No matter how much a team might like a player, no organization will simply stop listening to offers before the draft. As the cliche goes, everyone has a price.
But the Bucs are likely to spend the pick on a signal-caller, with Winston being the front-runner. One anonymous general manager told Glauber he'd be shocked if the team didn't select a quarterback with the No. 1 pick.
Still, with a slew of teams potentially interested in drafting either Winston or Mariota, the Bucs could whip up quite the bidding war if they play their cards correctly. Odds are they won't trade the pick, but the Bucs are wise to consider all options.
